Unplanned Journey: Wolf Finds Passion In Boxes, Digital Printing BY SUSAN RILEY Diane Wolf may not have planned to go into the box business, but it was there that she found her passion and life’s work culminating as the CEO of Carlisle Container Company in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She shared her inspirational story for the industry presentation at the AICC Spring Meeting in Bonita Springs, Florida, April 30-May 2. Being part of the packaging world came naturally for Diane. Next to being born into it, she married into it. Husband Chuck Wolf owned York

The Royal Group Acquires Northwest Packaging Inc. Cicero, Illinois based The Royal Group (TRG) announced the acquisition of Northwest Packaging Inc., based in Saint Paul, Minne- sota. This strategic move not only expands TRG’s manufacturing capabilities into the state of Minnesota but also helps enhance its commitment to delivering exceptional pack- aging solutions through a shared vision and family-oriented values. This acquisition will allow TRG to strength- en its presence in the Midwest while support- ing the Minneapolis sales and design center, ensuring that customers continue to receive high quality, tailored packaging solutions. Kevin Miller, CEO, The Royal Group, stated, “We are thrilled to welcome Northwest Pack- aging into the TRG family. Container Company of York, Pennsylvania, which was started in the 1950s by Chuck’s father and two partners. Diane was working in marketing at a hospital at the time, but as the wife of a box owner she was hearing all about the box world 24/7. She began helping the company in areas where they needed it. She did a stint in human resources; she helped select office furniture and new carpet. “And I don’t even know how I went from doing those kinds of things to getting involved in estimating and quoting boxes, but I did,” she said. She and Chuck started their family, and at times there were babies on the floor and dogs in the office, she said. Then in 1998, Chuck and his business partner bought Carlisle, Pennsylvania based Carlisle Con- tainer, established in 1965, as a contingency plan for York Container. Along the way, Chuck and Diane found out how important close CONTINUED ON PAGE 30 Diane Wolf, CEO of Carlisle Container gives the industry presentation during the AICC Spring Meeting in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Georgia-Pacific To Close Containerboard Mill In GA

Employees at the Cedar Springs Containerboard mill in Georgia were told that Georgia-Pacific plans to perma- nently close the operation later this year. Most positions will be eliminated by August 1. “Various factors influenced this difficult decision,” the company said in a news release. “Ultimately, we do not believe that the mill can competitively serve our custom- ers in the long term. This decision has nothing to do with the quality of work.” About 535 jobs will be impacted. The company said that production will continue for a limited time as the site works to fulfill customer commitments. “Georgia-Pacific’s focus in the coming weeks and months is to continue to safely operate while supporting our employees during the transition. ISM Reports Economic Activity To Be Mostly Flat Through 2025 The US economy will be mostly flat for the rest of 2025, say the nation’s purchasing and supply executives in the Spring 2025 ISM Supply Chain Planning Forecast (former- ly known as the Spring ISM Semiannual Economic Fore- cast). Expectations for the remainder of 2025 are lower than those expressed in December 2024. Trade issues, continued inflation concerns, and geopolitical uncertainty are all headwinds for the rest of the year. These projections are part of the forecast issued by Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Business Survey panelists. The forecast was presented by Timothy R. Fio- re, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, and Steve Miller, CPSM, CSCP, Chair of the ISM Services Business Survey Committee. Purchasing and supply executives report that their com- panies are operating, on average, at 79.2 percent of nor- mal capacity, 3.1 percentage points lower than the figure reported in December 2024. The 10 industries reporting operating capacity levels above the average rate of 79.2 percent — listed in order — are: Petroleum & Coal Prod- ucts; Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Paper Products; Printing & Related Support Activities; Miscellaneous Man- ufacturing; Food. Beverage & Tobacco Products; Wood Products; Chemical Products; Transportation Equipment; and Computer & Electronic Products. Production capacity is expected to increase 1.8 percent in 2025. In December, panelists reported an increase of 1.7 percentage points for 2024 and projected an increase of 4 percent this year. Twenty-seven percent of respondents expect capacity increases of, on average, 15.6 percent; 17 percent expect decreases of, on average, 14.6 percent; and 56 percent expect no change. The 13 industries expecting production increases in 2025—in order—are: Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Computer & Electronic Products; Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Plastics & Rub- ber Products; Primary Metals; Fabricated Metal Products; Paper Products; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Chemical Products; Machinery; and Transportation Equipment. age point lower than the 0.8-percentage point year-over- year increase reported for 2024. Thirty-four percent of respondents say that revenues for 2025 will increase, on average, 9.7 percent compared to 2024. Twenty-two per- cent say revenues will decrease (14.1 percent, on average), and 44 percent indicate no change. With an operating rate of 79.2 percent, a projected 1.3-percent decrease in capi- tal expenditures, a 7.5-percent increase in prices paid for raw materials, and a slight (0.1 percent) decrease in em- ployment expected by the end of 2025, the manufacturing sector will, at best, grow very slightly. “With eight manufacturing industries expecting reve- nue growth in 2025 and eight industries expecting em- ployment growth in 2025, panelists forecast a flat rest of the year. Sentiment in each industry was generally con- sistent with performance reports in the April 2025 Manu- facturing ISM Report On Business, as well as the fall ISM Supply Chain Planning Forecast conducted in December,” says Fiore. The eight of 18 industries that report projected reve- nue increases for the rest of 2025, listed in order — are: Primary Metals; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Computer & Electronic Products; Chemical Products; Electrical Equip- ment, Appliances & Components; Printing & Related Sup- port Activities; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; and Transportation Equipment.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

AF&PA Details US Paper Production, Capacity Trends The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) re- leased the 65th Paper Industry Annual Capacity and Fiber Consumption Survey. The report provides detailed data on US paper industry capacity and production compiled by the AF&PA statistics team. The industry utilized its assets more effectively with total paper and paperboard operating rate reaching 87.5 percent in 2024, a nearly four percentage point increase from 2023. US paper and paperboard production increased 3.2 percent last year, with increases in all categories, led by strong growth in containerboard. US paper and paper- board capacity declined by 2.0 percent in 2024, to 78.1 million tons. By comparison, the average annual rate of decline since 2015 was 0.9 percent. The industry continues to invest in new machines and machine conversions, particularly in the packaging and tis- sue sectors. Four machines came online in 2023 produc- ing containerboard, one boxboard machine came online this month, and another will start up later this year. One new tissue machine is planned for startup in the second half. However, more capacity has been removed across all sectors resulting from investments in mill system modern- ization and streamlining of businesses for efficiency and competitiveness. Containerboard capacity declined 0.9 percent in 2024. Despite three consecutive declines in 2022 through 2024, containerboard capacity continues to account for more than 50 percent of total US capacity to produce paper and paperboard. Packaging paper capacity increased 4.6 percent on the heels of a strong 4.8 percent growth rate in 2023. For the second year, all the growth came in unbleached pack- aging papers while bleached packaging papers has now declined for six consecutive years. Meanwhile, boxboard capacity declined 3.3 percent in 2024. One bleached boxboard machine came online this month following con-

Altro Industries Invests In HP Indigo 35K Digital Press

Canadian printer Altro Industries announced the installa- tion of an HP Indigo 35K Digital Press, strengthening its position in the packaging industry, expanding into new markets, and maintaining agility in an increasingly com- petitive landscape. The company said that the investment enables them to enter the folding carton market, comple- menting its existing offerings in labels, packaging tapes, and shrink sleeves. Previously, Altro Industries faced challenges sourcing folding cartons from vendors in Eastern Canada and the US, leading to high freight costs and exchange rate fluc- tuations. With the HP Indigo 35K, the company says it can now produce folding cartons locally, offering competitive pricing and significantly reducing delivery lead times. By eliminating reliance on distant suppliers, this investment not only resolves cost and logistical hurdles but also en- hances Altro Industries’ ability to compete in the folding carton market with high-quality, locally produced solutions, with reduced freight costs and better lead times. The ability to print folding cartons without the need for plates has enhanced production efficiency, reducing reli- ance on external suppliers while allowing for faster, more agile responses to customer orders. With fast turnaround capabilities, the HP Indigo 35K enables Altro Industries to help clients remain competitive by reducing MOQs and providing quicker access to packaging solutions. HP’s Indigo 35K Digital Press empowers Altro Indus- tries’ employees to develop their expertise in folding car- ton production by working with digital printing technolo- gy to explore new creative solutions. PMMI Report: Productivity Ranks As Top Priority For CPGs, Suppliers Productivity ranks as the top priority among surveyed CPGs and industry suppliers, according to the 2025 Em- bracing Operational Readiness report by PMMI, The As- sociation for Packaging and Processing Technologies, the producer of the PACK EXPO portfolio of trade shows. This report summarizes key issues, industry insights, and recommendations from PMMI’s 2025 Top to Top Sum- mit, held in February. The summit serves as a platform for OEMs and consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies to exchange perspectives, address shared challenges, and collaborate on practical solutions. More than three-quarters (78 percent) of participants voted for productivity as their top priority, followed by cost and automation (both 47 percent). Growth (39 percent) and workforce (24 percent) also attracted significant proportions of the vote. While it is unsurprising that participants are focused on productivity and cost, the importance given to automation is interest- ing, particularly as it was a key theme of all three distinct, yet interconnected phases explored at the Top to Top 2025 Summit. According to the study, vertical startups are successful and achievable through clear communication and collabo- ration between OEMs and end users.

Participants provided specific details about strategies for effective training, such as digital tools, follow-up as- sessments, automated systems, tailored learning formats, and digital solutions that include AI-driven troubleshoot- ing, interactive manuals, and augmented reality. Operator training highlights the need to account for diverse workplace realities, including language barriers, varying levels of technical skills, and high turnover rates. IT-OT integration explores the complexities of how end users and OEMs can work together to overcome barriers and ensure technical requirements, cybersecurity mea- sures, and data integration needs are met. By prioritizing real-time data visibility, secure infrastruc- ture, and early stakeholder involvement, organizations can achieve seamless IT-OT integration, future-proof their op- erations, and avoid costly setbacks. Justifying an IT-OT investment remains a key challenge. As a result, CPG companies must balance short-term, tan- gible benefits, such as cost savings, reduced downtime, and immediate ROI, with long-term advantages, including a scalable, future-proof solution that enhances automa- tion, provides real-time insights, and optimizes production processes. Solutions for all aspects of operational readiness are available at PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2025 (Sept. 29–Oct. 1 at the Las Vegas Convention Center).
