A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
On Monday this week we had an ex-Waldegrave student come in to give a very interesting talk about careers in Law. Miss Karimy spoke about the route she took into law and the different options available, from university courses to apprenticeships, and the kinds of jobs this can lead to. Miss Karimy also gave practical advice on building one’s CV early, including tips on where to find accessible certifications, how to make the most of volunteering opportunities, networking, and how to demonstrate an interest in law even before university or formal work experience. Year 12 students have started receiving some feedback following their recent mock exams, which should help them with their revision strategies moving forward. The monitoring is due to be sent out to all parents and carers after the half term break, during the week commencing Monday 16th June. This week, the school launched a new online well-being platform to the students called Zumos. This platform is primarily focused on supporting children and adolescents with their mental health and wellbeing. It is designed to build resilience and self-confidence using a variety of tools and resources, including games, mindfulness exercises, and expert-written vocal recordings. This tool is in addition to our existing pastoral support and should enhance what is currently on offer to them. Coming up after half-term, Mr Montgomery has arranged for Government and Politics students’ to have a tour of Parliament and visit the Supreme Court. They also hope to meet with local MP, Munira Wilson. This will be a very interesting trip and will help bring their studies to life. British Rowing are offering a free rowing session on Friday 30th May with Twickenham Rowing Club. Details have been shared with Year 12 or see poster overleaf. I wish you all an enjoyable and restful break! PARENT GOVERNOR RECRUITMENT Our Governing Board is currently recruiting for a parent governor who wants to work at a strategic level to develop the school. We would be particularly interested in appointing someone who works or has experience in Higher Education or Careers Education. Continuous training and development are key to the role and will be provided to help you acquire/develop the skills to be an effective governor and you can read more about the work our governors do on our website. We have sent a letter home with further information and details on how to apply.
MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12
BOOK OF THE MONTH
The Island of Missing Trees, Elif Shafak ‘The Island of Missing Trees’ weaves history, memory, and nature into a powerful story of love and loss. Set between war-torn Cyprus and present-day London, it explores the marks conflict leaves on the lives of the characters, with a fig tree entwined through this narrative. Shafak’s storytelling is deeply human, highlighting the pain of displacement and the resilience of identity. This novel is both moving and thought-provoking, poignantly discussing how generational trauma is instilled in our lives today.
