Robert F. Schmitz Memorial Scholarship

Robert F. Schmitz was born and raised on his family farm in Lone Rock WI, graduated from Lone Rock High and served in the US Army infantry during World Ward II in the European theater. He and his wife Beverly, moved to Stevens Point in 1960 to own and operate an A&W restaurant which they ran for 10 years. In 1963, Bob was hired as the Health Inspector for the City of Stevens Point which expanded into the entire area of Portage County. After 25 years of service, he retired as the Director of Environmental Health and his primary concern was the quality and regulation/protection of groundwater. To that end, Bob worked with Byron Shaw, to establish what is now known as the Water & Environmental Analysis Lab (WEAL) which continues the critical work of monitoring and protecting water in 22 WI Counties and the Great Lakes. Beverly Schmitz chose to create this scholarship to honor the memory her late husband and to help CNR/UWSP students complete their undergraduate degrees and encourage their work as professionals to ensure our water is safe for human use and recreational purposes.
