WHAT YOU (K)NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR KNEE REPLACEMENT

Were those tears?

Controlling swelling and pain levels is key. This can be accomplished through a number of treatment strategies but suffice it to say, if pain and swelling are left unaddressed EVERYTHING else becomes more challenging. The movement of the knee cap is critical to regaining full knee motion. The knee cap should be mobile. When you bend your knee, the cap should slide downwards and when you straighten your knee it should slide upwards. Limitations in either of these motions can cause issues down the line. Jump start your quadriceps . Quad control plays a very large role in knee stability and helps with activities such as: getting up from a chair, walking, standing on one leg to put your pants on, going up/down stairs, and the list goes on. Like any good rehab program, charting an individualized approach is extremely important as no two people (and no two knees) are exactly the same. If you or someone you know has questions about knee replacement surgery and pre or post surgical care please don’t hesitate to give us a call and one of our Doctor’s of Physical Therapy will be more than happy to answer any questions that we can. Knowledge can be very powerful and developing an individualized plan with your healthcare team can make all the difference in successfully navigating the road to full recovery.

They could have been beads of sweat originating from the corner of his eye...?

Either way I stopped pushing.

It was the summer of 2006, I was in the final few weeks of my first clinical rotation. Jim had his knee replaced about 4 weeks ago now and it had been a couple weeks since we started working together. Like many PT students that initially lack experience, I followed the lead of the clinicians I worked with to begin to form my treatment approach. For Jim and his knee, that involved him lying on his stomach while I put most of my effort into bending his heel towards his back pocket.

Not comfortable, to say the least.

Roughly 30 million people suffer from osteoarthritis and it has been projected that by the year 2040 that number may reach 78 million. The very first knee replacement surgery was performed in 1968 and currently, about 600,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed yearly. Luckily, treatment approaches have progressed quite a bit in my 12+ years as a PT. By focusing our efforts on the following key areas, the rehab following knee replacement (although not always rainbows and sunshine) is significantly more comfortable and effective in 2021 than it was when I started practicing. Early movement is crucial following your replacement. By moving early and often you give yourself the best chance to avoid excessive scar tissue build up.

Cheers to moving well and living life! Joe
