times as much money as he had taken from them and to give half of his money to the poor. The Saviour said, “ This day is salvation come to this house . . . For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Two rich men came and talked with God’s Son. One chose riches rather than eternal life. The other allowed the Lord Jesus to change his life completely. Have you chosen something rather than eternal life through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ? Have you placed fame, friends, position, riches, or a life- plan before Him? Let Him be your Saviour and plan your life and all of these other things will be yours plus eternal life with Him. Feb. 17, 1952 USING OUR HOMES FOR CHRIST Luke 10 :38-42; John 11:1-5; 24-27 Pointers on the Lesson Today’s lesson takes us into the realm of the home. The home is the bulwark of the church. When the church realizes this fact full well, it will give proper attention to the development of this in stitution. Too much the home is being neglected these days with countless stories of tragedy resulting. In the con fines of the home under consideration today, it is difficult to think of such things as crime, drunkenness, incom patibility, and many other things that blacken multitudes of homes today. The Lord Jesus Christ had a place in this home and that made the difference. Attitudes Toward Christ Luke 10:38-42 Those who profess to love the Lord Jesus Christ assume different attitudes toward Him. That is illustrated by Martha and Mary. When Jesus came to their home, Martha seemed to feel that the proper attitude to assume toward Him was that of service. She was very sincere and wanted to please Him more than anything else in the world. And so she left no stone unturned to make His stay in her home pleasant. In fact, she worked so hard that her toil became a bit irksome. She “was cumbered about much serving” (v. 40). More than this the Lord had to kindly rebuke her be cause in her efforts to please Him she became “ careful and troubled about many things” (v. 41). On the other hand, of Mary it is said that she “ also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word” (v. 39). Note the word also. The story turns on this key word. Mary did not think lightly of service, but she “ also” recognized the place that devotion has in a true believer’s life. Service is good and the Lord expects it. But He also wants His followers to have time in their lives for meditation. The devotional aspect of the Christian life must not be neglected. Right here is where many are failing today. They are so busy here and there in the service of the Lord that they do not have time to pray and read God’s Word. That is

He was the chief one of this group who labored under an oppressive Roman sys tem. He was rich. Doubtless he became rich by foul means. Moreover, he was little of stature. Then, too, he was a man of energy. We see him running and climbing and making haste. Watch Jesus now as He moved in grace toward Zacchaeus in all his need. “ Today I must abide at thy house” (v. 5). The statement may properly be rendered, “ Today, it is proper, it is right for Me to abide at thy house,” or even better, “ Today I ought to abide at thy house” . In Luke 18:1 the same Greek word is translated ought, namely, “ Men ought always to pray” . Jesus spoke as He did to Zacchaeus because He had some definite plans for the welfare of his home. He had salvation to leave there and His foreseeing knowledge told Him that that household would open its doors to Him. There are other homes where Jesus ought to abide today. How about yours? Are you willing that He shall? Helps for the Children Two Rich Men Decide Luke 18:18-30; 19:1-10 Memory Verse: “Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good” (Rom. 12:9). Two men came to see the Lord Jesus Christ because they felt that only He could help them. The first man was a ruler who asked the Saviour, “ Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” When the Lord Jesus reminded the ruler of the Old Testament commandments, the ruler said that he had kept them from his youth up. The Saviour knew that the young man was loving his riches more than he loved God. When Jesus told the ruler to sell that which he had and give the money unto the poor and come and fol low Him, the ruler went away sorrow ful. He chose his riches rather than a life of love and service for the Son of God. When the disciples saw what the ruler had done, Peter reminded his Lord that they had left all to follow Him. God’s Son told His disciples that those who have left wealth or loved ones for His sake would be greatly rewarded here and in the future life with Him. Another day the Lord Jesus was to pass through the city of Jericho. A wealthy but exceedingly sinful man named Zacchaeus knew that he needed God’s Son in his life. To see the Saviour, Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree, for he was a very short man and the crowds kept him from getting near the street. As the Saviour passed along, He stopped, looked up into the tree, and said, “ Zac chaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house.” Those who heard the Saviour’s words thought that surely He could not know what a sinner Zacchaeus was! The little man joyfully received the Lord Jesus into his home and prepared a dinner for Him. Zacchaeus confessed his sins of stealing from the people whose taxes he collected. He promised to repay each one four
