giving of the manna, and the quail, the smitten rock, their repeated murmurings against God, followed by chastenings— when we recount all of these, how we mar vel at God’s tender, watchful, preserving love, and are amazed that Israel ever should have lapsed into idolatry. We may be certain that their falling away was due to their forgetting the won ders of His grace. How necessary is the memory of God’s dealings: “Thou shalt remember all the way” ; “Son; remember”; “I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.” At the close of a year and the beginning of a new year, it is most appropriate to review what the Lord has done for us. Let us say with the Psalmist: “I remem ber thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches”.; “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” Make the meeting a real praise and testi-3 mony meeting, allowing all of the members of the society to take part. Center the one- minute testimonies about the theme, “What God Has Done for Me During 1936.” In tersperse the testimonies with hymns and choruses of praise. Make the meeting the best meeting of the year. Repeat from memory, if possible, Psalms 100, 67, and 121 . “Give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous work” (Psa. 105:1, 2). 2. Invite an outstanding speaker familiar with prophecy to give a talk on “Great Events of 1936 and Their Relation to Prophecy and the Signs of the Times.” The Bible has much to say about Ethiopia. Study the Word in the light of the recent conflict between Italy and Ethiopia. The conflict in Spain, the Jewish persecutions, the unrest, the political strife everywhere— these in the light of the Scriptures are very significant. 3. Different topics assigned to certain mem bers could follow these suggested themes: 1. In how many countries does our de nomination have missionaries working? 2. How many new missionaries have we sent out this year? Where? 3. Does our local church support any one missionary or station? 4. How many members has our church at home received? 5. Does our Christian Endeavor Society do its part in the missionary program? A discussion on the above topics may arouse new interest, and challenge the members to greater things for the New Year. II. “And must I be giving again and again?” My peevish, pitiless answer ran; “Oh, no,” said the angel, piercing me through, “Just give till the Master stops giving to you.” »vi—S elected . II. T he W eary H eart -B roken W orld We often look at the multitudes of people on the streets. Their faces are strained and weary. They are carrying a great burden of care. Some yearning is forever driving them on, a yearning that is never satisfied. They rush into the theaters to get away from themselves. J. H. JoWett once said of such a multitude:. “Men will search any where and do anything except turn in sim ple surrender to the Christ Himself. They weary themselves in intellectual explora tion, and they will not lay their wills in childlike simplicity in lowly obeisance to the Master’s call. ‘Come unto me,' ye sink ing, exhausted seekers, ‘and I will give you rest.’ ”— The Watchman Examiner. III. C hristmas Oh, is there among us an aching heart, For this happy Christmas day? Come leave our myrrh with Bethlehem’s Babe, And bear His smile away. And is there a heart that loves His name, And would His image bear? Go forth like Him, and let aching hearts Your kind compassion share. —S elected . IV. P ity on the P oor Many Scriptures teach the importance of remembering the poor, and many promises are for those who think on the needy. Ex amples are Proverbs 14:31; 19:17; 21:13, and Galatians 2:10.— G oodman . Moses knew the value of an inventory. He called upon the Israelites to take a men tal inventory of the remarkable incidents so indicative of provision from an all-wise God: “The way which the Lord thy God led . . . And he . . . fed thee with manna . . . Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell.” Moses also re minded the Israelites that God had a great purpose in all of His dealings with them, that purpose being “that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.” All of the guidance, the discipline, the watch care, and the teaching was given in order to show them that “as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee.” In view of all of this record of God’s mercy, the Israelites were exhorted to obey God’s commandments, to walk in His ways, and to fear — reverentially trust — Him.
