“Why bind these eager limbs?” “To set you free.” “Why dull these ears of mine?” “That you may hear.” “And thus shut out these loving friends?” “To bring them near.” “Why check these thoughts of mine?” “That you may think.” “And parchest thus these thirsty lips?” “Of Me to drink.” “Why break this earthly house of mine?” “To dwell therein.” “And endest thus this throbbing life?” “New to begin.” jjffili-P H iu p W endell C ra n n ell . DECEMBER 17 Flying with a Broken Pinion “The Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins” (Mk. 2:10). I remember a flash of righteous indigna tion that swept over Dr. Scofield’s face once as he said, “People say that ‘the bird with the broken pinion never soars as high again.-’ As if we did not all have a broken wing! For most of us both wings are broken, and both legs, and our necks!” So let us just give up this notion that it is the “broken pinion” that is going to keep us from soaring as high as some victorious-life Christians can soar. One thing is certain: the bird without a broken pinion is never going to know victory. One qualification you must have for the victorious life is the broken pinion, the broken nature, uttermost weakness. God makes no offer of victory to strong people, people who have not failed, and failed utterly. But for sinners He has a gospel.— C harles G. T ru m bu ll . “For 1 will give you a mouth and wis dom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist” (Lk. 21:15). Crisis hours find the Saviour at our side. Emergency wisdom is reserved for us in Christ. Trust Him to be mouth, matter, and wisdom to you in hours of need. Mar tyrs like Ridley and Latimer experienced the fulfillment of this promise beautifully. Said Latimer, “Be of good cheer, brother Ridley, and play the man: for we shall this day light such a candle by God’s grace in England as I trust shall never be put out.” To be full of the Spirit is to be full of heavenly wisdom. fs'^frThe Sunday School Times. DECEMBER 19 Shortcomings of the Saints “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). When the best of men look at the Lord Jesus Christ, they are swift to realize that all their righteousness is as filthy rags. They can see that even their most notable achievements leave them in the state of unprofitable servants. Judged by His per fect life, their lives must be seen to come far short of the divine requirements. Con sequently, any standard of comparison less than the holy standard of the sinless Son of God, must lead us to conclusions which, in every way, are unsound. —Life of Faith. DECEMBER 18 He Gives Wisdom

yours. You have the right to draw from Him the utmost need of your hearts.” —A. B. S im pso n . DECEMBER 13 Self Ciphered “Yet not I, but Christ” (Gal. 2:20). Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, or bow myself to the Most High God ? What shall I give Thee to express my thankfulness, though not to requite Thy bounty? . . . My possessions I resign as Thy right. I will call nothing mine but Thee. I can say, My Lord and my God, and that is enough: I thankfully quit my claim to all things else. I myself am not mine own. Yet it is infinitely better for me to be Thine than if I were mine own. This is my hap piness that I can say, “My own God, My own Father.” And oh, what a blessed ex change hast Thou made with me, to give me Thyself, who art an infinite sum, for myself, who am but an insignificant cipher! »• — R ichard A l le in e . It is the voice of our great Lover that speaks to us here in words so tender and true and wise, and His voice thrills our hearts; to us it is enough that where He is there we shall be. Scant is our knowl edge of the place; we do not know its glo ries, its extent, its location, nor are we con cerned to know; it suffices us to know that it is the Father’s house, and Christ is there, and He wants us to be there to share it with Himself, and we want to be there because He wants to have us there. These are the longings that His love has begot ten in our hearts, and so we say, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”— J ohn T. M aw son . DECMBER 15 Blessings Through the Blood “Having made peace through the blood of his cross" (Col. 1:20). The blood of Christ gives you a share in the love, the guidance, and the protec tion of God. Oh, if you only understood this—the God who has provided the blood of His Son, who has received you because of that blood—He has become your God. He who has given His Son for you, how shall He not with Him also freely give you all things? This is the blessing and power of the blood—it brings you into an eternal covenant with God; He becomes your Leader and your Portion. Meditate upon and adore God for this divine won der, that you have been bought by the blood of the Son of God, and let your life become a translation into earthly walk and behav ior of the song: “Thou art worthy . . . for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood.”— A ndrew M urray . DECEMBER 14 Words of Love "His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is alto gether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend” (Cant. 5:16).
