Spring Into Action
Did you know that approximately 54,000 individuals are diagnosed with oral cancer every year? Acknowledging this staggering number, we want to raise awareness that April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Our office prioritizes oral health, offering complimentary oral cancer screenings during initial exams. During these screenings, we conduct thorough head and neck examinations, assessing the throat, tongue, and floor of the mouth for any signs of concern. Additionally, we utilize advanced technology like the Velescope to find potential areas of interest that usually appear as dark spots. If any abnormalities are detected, we refer our patients to oral surgeons for further evaluation and care. To lower your risk of oral cancer, limit your alcohol consumption, avoid tobacco products, and maintain a healthy diet. Your oral health is our priority; we’re here to ensure you stay healthy and well-cared for.
Harness the Power of the Season
Spring has arrived! Having grown up in Florida, where the sun and warmth are constants, the arrival of springtime always fills me with joy. The transition from the colder months to spring’s warmth is like a breath of fresh air, rejuvenating my body and soul. One of the things I love most about spring is how it brings everything back to life. The vibrant colors of blooming flowers and the fresh greenery that blankets the landscape never fail to lift my spirits. Longer days and warmer temperatures mean more time outdoors, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying nature’s beauty.
As someone who values productivity and positivity, I find that spring offers ample opportunities to thrive. With the extended daylight hours, there’s more time in the evenings after work to pursue hobbies, exercise, or simply relax outdoors with a walk or jog after a long day. The added sunlight infuses me with renewed energy and motivation, making me feel more optimistic and driven to accomplish my goals. In addition to its physical attributes, spring is special to me. April is Listening Awareness Month, and as a dentist, I understand the importance of active listening in my profession. By attentively listening to my patients, I can better understand their needs, alleviate their concerns, and provide the best possible care. It’s a skill that enhances my professional relationships and enriches my interactions with others. Skipping ahead to later in the month, did you know that April 23 marks National Take a Chance Day? It’s a nice reminder for us all to embrace opportunities and step outside of our comfort zones. Reflecting on my journey into the dental field, I realize that taking risks has been instrumental in shaping my life. Leaving my hometown in Florida to pursue dental school in Richmond, Virginia, was a daunting decision but one that ultimately led me to where I am today in New Jersey. It taught me that growth often lies beyond the boundaries of familiarity and that the rewards of taking chances far outweigh the fear of the unknown.
I believe that embracing risk is essential for personal and professional growth. While the prospect of the unknown may be intimidating, the potential for growth and self-discovery far outweighs apprehension. Every chance we take catalyzes transformation and progress. As spring blooms around us, I encourage everyone to embrace the season of renewal and take a chance on the possibilities that await. After all, life’s greatest adventures often begin with a single leap of faith. Happy spring!

GROW YOUR GREEN THUMB THIS SPRING A SPRING GARDENING GUIDE
Spring is in the air; the chirping birds and warm air call you outdoors. It’s the perfect time to start your garden. Even as a beginning gardener, you can find plants and flowers to bring you joy throughout the summer. Carrots and radishes are quick, easy, and grow well in most areas. Carrots are versatile veggies great for snacking and cooking; even your dogs will love them! They need to be planted early, though, as they take about three months to germinate. Radishes are cool-season vegetables you can start indoors and plant outside after the last frost. Other vegetables can be started from seed indoors in late February to early March. Try cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, leeks, endive, and lettuce. Later, in mid to late March, you can start peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, Swiss chard, and tomatillos indoors.
Wait to plant your seeds and seedlings in the ground until two weeks after the last frost. Some early cold- tolerant vegetables, like cabbage, broccoli, and head lettuce, can go in the ground early to mid-March. Heat-loving plants like peppers, okra, and eggplant that grow slowly can also be planted in March. Tomatoes are the stars of many gardens. It is best to wait until early April to plant them, though. They are like Goldilocks and prefer everything just right — not too cold or hot. We can’t talk about gardening without giving a few helpful tips for adding color. Plant hydrangea, aster, pansy, sweet peas, garden mums, and Oriental lilies in the spring to invite pollinators and provide blooming color throughout the summer. Spring bulbs, like crocus and daffodils, are the first to bloom. Sometimes, they will even bloom when there is a bit of snow on the ground. But it is best to plant bulbs in the fall so they have time to settle in their roots. A gardener’s best friend is the USDA Hardiness Zone Map. Since most states include three different growing zones, it is a handy resource to choose the best plants for your area. The website at PlantHardiness.ars.usda.gov has a wealth of information, including tips for easy maintenance. So, grab your gloves, get your seeds, and enjoy watching your garden grow!
