APRÈS-OSCARS Dream of silk on the red carpet It’s not just about dresses and diamonds, but rather represents a genuine celebration of the constancy of the arts of film and fashion and the creative spirit that defines them
A s is the case each year, this year’s Oscars pre- sented an opportunity for the film industry’s biggest names to meet up on the red carpet of the Dolby The- atre and embrace the imagination of fashion designers. And the result of this stylistic synergy wasn’t lacking. The media’s general thirst for this kind of unadulterated, unreserved glamour – resulting from the lack of red-carpet events during last year’s Hollywood strike – was quenched by fabulous diamonds and dresses re- quiring kilometres of silk and filigree threads, but also thousands of hours of meticulous tailoring. This year, as expected, an homage to the grandi- osity of Hollywood’s golden age was trending, offering us a bunch of re- curring themes to comment on the charm hits and misses. The number of black dresses we saw on the red carpet this year was astounding, but none of them were any less spectacular, perhaps due to being in the most minimalist of all shades. Robbie’s stylist, Andrew Mukamal, wanted simplicity to prevail, and for the focus to remain on her silhouette that’s worthy of that of a Greek god- dess. Accessories were reduced to a
minimum, with the exception of a bulky gold and diamond bracelet on her left wrist and a ring in the same style on her right hand, both sporting the famous stamp of Fred Leighton. Carey Mulligan also appeared in a black dress, though admittedly one with a white tulle train. This ar- chival Balenciaga gown dating back to a 1951 original was recreated for
