ka dot dress worn by Jennifer Law- rence also belongs to this understat- ed flirtation. The dress in question is from the Spring 2024 collection of this historically important Paris- ian house, and was the creation that brought down the curtain on Dior’s fashion show. It required a painstak- ing 1,500 hours to make, with lay- ers of wet silk pressed together un- der heat to achieve a ripple effect. The other chic camp – the one that turned to the effective charm of glittering metallic in bright and el- egantly upbeat tones – includes the likes of Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlize Theron. Zendaya shone in a formfitting pink and black Giorgio Armani Privé archival gown featuring palm tree motifs and exposed shoul- ders, evoking the timeless code of se- duction of this dress that’s provided by the fitted silhouette of a mermaid. In contrast, Anya’s styling paid trib- ute to a cult creation of Christian Di- or: she wore a contemporary inter- pretation inspired by the great man’s 1949 Venus gown, which forms part of the permanent collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both the original and the inspired copy boast elaborately embroidered details requiring many thousands of hours of dedicated craftsmanship. Considering her long and fruitful collaboration with Dior, it was some- what to be expected that we would
see Charlize don one of its original creations, but what we got was a true demonstration of how this stunning- ly beautiful actress shines like gold and silver; a demonstration of Char- lize’s (un)real shine. The dress, which resembled a body wrap of the finest silk, was complemented by prestig- ious pieces from the Quatre collection of Boucheron, which is celebrating its 20 th anniversary and has never pre- viously been seen on the red carpet. And finally, no review of Os- cars fashion should conclude with- out mentioning the actress who took home the prestigious “Best Actress” statuette. Emma Stone opted for a Louis Vuitton custom creation with surreally exaggerated hourglass con- tours, in a mint sorbet coloured jac- quard weave fabric. The gown was a sophisticated nod to the eclectic aesthetic of the character she por- trayed in the film Poor Things. Add- ing a kind of wow factor to her out- fit was a 30.47-carat gold octagonal step-cut Sri Lankan sapphire on a di- amond-encrusted necklace from the Louis Vuitton fine jewellery collec- tion. In her emotional speech, Em- ma showed how the dress hadn’t en- dured the excitement of the evening, with the hem loosening at the back during the award ceremony. “It prob- ably happened during ‘I'm just Ken,’” she said, referring to her La La Land co-star Ryan Gosling.

This strapless gown, which is cinched in at the waist to accen- tuate the dramatic train, represented a perfect choice for Mulligan, whose understatedly elegant fashion style stands out on every occasion. The long gloves she wore are a ladies’ ac- cessory that we’re sure we’ll be see- ing regularly in the coming months, either with or without the fabulous Boucheron jewellery.
