Iowa State University is the largest employer in Ames, with 16,000 employees serving over 36,000 students. Iowa State is world-renown for scientific discovery and is a center for research, especially in agriculture and technology. Over 100 programs of study are available. The student body comes from all 50 states and over 120 countries. Many events are hosted on campus and at the Iowa State Center, which boosts tourism revenue to the area. Many national concert tours are hosted every year, along with conventions and events such as the Special Olympics, the Iowa Games, and Odyssey of the Mind.
