ANCC FOUNDATION DID YOU KNOW?

The “In Memoriam” section of the ANCC website highlights the lives of Members and staff who have recently passed. If you would like to send a submission to honor the memory of a loved one, please contact our Marketing Coordinator by clicking here. You may send a biography, along with photos as well to be added to this section. To read about the lives of those who have recently passed, click here. In Memoriam George S. Patton, Olympian George S. Patton, Jr., USMA ’09, became a Resident Founding Member of ANCC in 1928. Most know of him as a brilliant tactician in the use of armor and as the colorful commander of the 3rd Army during its lightening surge across Europe in 1944. Some may know of him as a member of General “Black Jack” Pershing’s staff during the Mexico expedition against Pancho Villa in 1916. Few, however, are aware that Patton competed for the United States in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden in 1912. To learn more about this aspect of George Patton, click here.

GOLF

2024 WMGA Senior Men’s ‘A’ Team The Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Senior ‘A’ Team competition matches will begin in April and continue into the first part of May as needed. Division winners will proceed on to play single elimination quarter, semi-final, and final matches. We need the best senior golfers, age 55 and over, to represent ANCC. Selection criteria for the team matches will be based on the 1 April handicaps (which are expected to be current and accurate). All matches are played at scratch. If you have a handicap of six (6) or below and are interested in being considered for the team, please contact the team co-captains: Steve Galing at (703) 407-0703 or steven_galing@msn.com Lynn Wessman at (703) 626-4313 or lwessman@comcast.net SGLNV- Senior Golf League of Northern Virginia The Senior Golf League of Northern Virginia was founded in 2004 to promote friendly competition between Senior Golfers at Country Clubs in Northern Virginia. Matches are played at scratch on Wednesdays with Tee Times from 10:30 – 11:30 AM. ANCC needs low handicap senior golfers 50 years of age and older to play on the ANCC team. When was the last time you had your clubs re-gripped? Eighteen months is the absolute maximum you should wait to change your grips because slick or worn grips can have a negative impact on your game, like driving on worn tires. Maintaining proper grip pressure is essential in making a smooth swing, but worn grips require tighter grip pressure which inhibits the swing. Worn grips are especially slippery in wet conditions. Degradation is gradual, so you may not even realize how worn they have gotten. Stop by either Golf Shop for more information or to have one of the Golf Professionals take look at your grips.

This is organized play that develops new friendships and enhances your enjoyment of the game of golf and Club facilities. The SMGO program features an ABCD scramble at 8:30 AM typically on the first and third Wednesday of each month, at the Arlington course, commencing in April and continuing through October. Other scrambles may be scheduled during the season when play dates are available. All ANCC members are welcome regardless of their handicap. If you were a member in 2023, your membership will automatically be renewed for 2024. A sign-up list for new members to the SMGO will be posted in the Arlington Golf Shop. If you do not want to participate in 2024, please indicate your decision to be deleted on the sign-up sheet at the ARL Golf Shop or you may contact Tim Campen at campta3435@gmail.com or (703) 901-3609. New members who may be leaving the area for the winter are encouraged to sign up prior to departing. The 2024 dues, expected to be $110 for the season, will be set prior to the opening of the season. Dues cover the cost of lunch in the Clubhouse at the completion of each of the 14 ABCD Scrambles...best lunch deal in town! Standard cart fees are charged for each event in which a member participates. A $10.00 entry fee for the prize pool and the cost of coffee and pastries, available before each ABCD Scramble, is collected at check-in prior to the 8:30 AM shotgun tee off. The ANCC Men’s “B” Team competition begins late April and is a great way to meet other ANCC members and play competitive golf against other clubs in the area. The ‘B’ Team is open to all men with course handicaps ranging from 5 to 16. Matches are held on Saturdays and/or Sundays from late April thru July with playoffs going from August thru October. Signups for both tryout dates begin on March 6th. Tryouts will be held on Sunday, 7 April ( click here ) at Fairfax, and on Saturday, 13 April ( click here ) at Arlington. Don’t miss out on a great experience competing against other country clubs and playing a variety of local courses. If you are 50 or older and retired from at least one occupation, you are eligible to join the league. ANCC fields two separate teams which are very competitive in league play -- one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players. During the season the Arlington team will play 12 other teams both home and away for a 24-match season. The Fairfax team will play 10 other teams both home and away for a 20-match season. The League’s season runs from early April through early October. Play is on Thursday mornings and is four-ball match play with a 3-point Nassau, combined with a sweepstakes competition. We use handicaps in all matches and our team members have handicap indexes ranging from the single digits through the mid-thirties. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in at least a third of our matches during the season and may volunteer to play any matches to which you are not assigned. The home club provides practice balls and waives green fees. It also provides morning pastries, coffee, and a buffet lunch afterwards. The 2024 Army-Navy teams will be put together within the next few months and eligible ANCC members can sign up for either team. Visit the teams ’web pages on the ANCC website for signup instructions. Signups are open from now until 31 January 2024 for the Arlington Team and until 1 March 2024 for the Fairfax Team. The pages for the two teams can be found on the ANCC web site under Golf, ANCC Golf Orga- nizations & Teams, Men’s Groups. For more information, visit the teams’ web pages.
