CREATING USABLE SPACE IN UNUSUAL PLACES ADDS INTRIGUE TO HOMES

hen you see “Bargain Mansions” host Tamara Day on television swinging a sledgehammer, it’s not just her construction and design skills on dis- play. It’s also a reflection of a do-it-yourself mindset that was instilled in Day as a child growing up on a farm. Hiring outside professionals for home proj- ects wasn’t an option, which meant Day, her par- ents, and her siblings would roll up their sleeves together. Now, as a nationally known designer, Day shares tips and trends she has tried in her projects. W Book nooks are a huge trend that I see in newand old houses. I try to incorporate an interesting use for odd spaces every chance I get. Spaces underneath stairs, a random unused closet, any space that is unexpected to create a mud space or reading nook for kids is always a great way to add value and interest to your home. Occupying space that was otherwise unusable adds value and style while creating that charming feeling of an old house even if it’s new.”
