The Lost Daughter
© Universal Benchley’s best-selling novel of the same name, the 1975 summer blockbuster had a simple but effective premise: a gigantic, man-eating shark terrorises the small coastal town of Amity Island, while a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and hunter (Robert Shaw) try to put an end to the carnage. The movie was the highest-grossing film of all time until Star Wars two years later, and it spawned three sequels, videogames, theme-park rides and even several stage musicals. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Spielberg’s heartwarming tale about a boy (Henry Thomas) befriending an alien stranded on Earth proved to be an out-of-this-world blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film for 11 years until Spielberg’s own Jurassic Park beat the record in 1993.
The Color Purple Spielberg’s eighth directorial film is an epic period drama based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker. It portrays the trials and tribulations of a young African American girl (Whoopi Goldberg) in early 20th-century rural Georgia. The movie also stars Oprah Winfrey in her film debut and was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
The Goonies Superman: The Movie and Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner helms this adventure classic based on a story by Steven Spielberg, which sees a gang of kids going on a treasure hunt. Look out for a young Sean Astin, Josh Brolin (in his film debut) and Ke Huy Quan among the titular group of children.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence Spielberg wrote and directed this 2001 sci-fi film, which stars The Sixth Sense actor Haley Joel Osment as David, a child-like android capable of experiencing love. The film is dedicated to Stanley Kubrick, who was the initial developer and from whom Spielberg took over as director.
