THERE’S A PUDDLE IN MY SHOWER! How to Get Hair Out of the Shower Drain

Decor Galore 3 Home Decor Subscription Boxes

Have you ever taken a shower and noticed standing water at your feet? One of the main reasons your shower drain gets clogged is that hair falls out while you’re showering. While it’s inevitable hair will end up down your shower drain, you can use a few methods to unclog your drain and remove as much hair as possible. Dissolve the hair. Several natural remedies can dissolve hair stuck in your shower drain. Before you grab any harsh chemicals or use utensils to unclog your drain, try pouring white vinegar and baking soda down your drain. Not only will it dissolve the hair, but it will also act as a disinfectant to fight odor, fungi, and other bacteria. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the clogged drain and follow immediately with 1 cup of white vinegar; let it sit for a few minutes, then run the water. Repeat if needed. Use a hair snake tool. If natural remedies don’t do the trick, you can use several tools to remove the hair from your drain manually. At the hardware store in the plumbing and bathroom section, you can find hair snakes that remove clumps of hair from your drain. While it may not remove all of the hair, it will pull out a large amount that will unclog your drain. These utensils are long and flexible — simply put the snake down the drain, twist it, and remove it. Use a paper towel or latex gloves to remove the hair from the snake.

Dislodge the clog with a plunger. For those with long hair, some strands may wrap around the strainer, making it difficult to pull out manually with your hands or tweezers. To loosen the hair, run the faucet and place a plunger

over the drain. Plunge the drain vigorously, and the pressure should loosen the hair and make it easier

to remove. Next, run water to see if you cleared the clog. If not, plunge the drain again — stubborn clogs may need a bit more elbow grease. If you have tried all these methods and still have problems with your shower drain, call your local plumber. They have more sophisticated tools and techniques for diagnostics and finding a solution.
