Exploring ‘Family’ —

Our Firm’s First Value

Over the next several months, we’re going to take the time to discuss our firm’s values. At our workshops, we talk a good deal about values to pass on to future generations, and we even provide a book that helps you write down not only your values but also your story. (If you don’t have this book or have misplaced it, let us know, and we’ll send you a new one.) These are the values we seek to live up to as a firm: Family, Integrity, Freedom, Capitalism, and Coaching. This month, we’ll take a look at Family. Family is one of life’s most precious treasures — it’s where unconditional love, support, and security should be found. But while many people have the privilege of being raised in a nuclear family, not everyone fits this traditional definition of a family. And that’s where the beauty of friendship and community comes in. Close friendships can provide many of the same benefits as being part of a tightknit family can; sometimes, you can feel closer with these friends than you can with your own family. This is where the community becomes family. It’s possible for both types of relationships to exist simultaneously and even complement each other in positive ways. For example, having friends from different backgrounds can introduce new ideas and experiences into your life while also providing a sense of comfort in knowing people out there care about you unconditionally. We believe strong families create stronger communities and a better quality of life for everyone in them. It’s where supporting each other is offered, not just physically but emotionally as well. It’s providing a warm meal or a listening ear and being there for each other in times of need. Families give us the support needed to thrive and grow so that together we can create a better future for all. We are proud of the strong families in our community, and we are grateful for all you do to make it a better place. I thank you for your commitment to each other and your dedication to making our community stronger. Together, we can cultivate an environment that values family, compassion, and inclusion — for the benefit of us all.

The value of family, whether it’s blood-related or chosen, cannot be understated. Everyone deserves to have some form of support system in their lives, which is why it’s essential to recognize how close friendships can bring similar comfort and joy that come with being part of a loving family unit.

Here at Field Law, each of you is part of a family to us. We share the responsibility to create a community together. Within this sense of community, we can build deep connections with others and learn how to create a network of trust and support that gives us strength and security. Ultimately, having both family and community as part of our lives helps us feel connected not only to individual people but also to something larger than ourselves.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day

It’s the season of love, and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! With all the heart-shaped candies, chocolates, and decorations filling both stores and homes, we want to share with you a few fun ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the whole family!

1. Bake something special! You can make homemade fudge, heart-shaped Rice Krispie treats, or chocolate-covered strawberries. Make it extra fun by listening to your favorite songs about love while you bake.

2. Make Valentine’s cards! You can use construction paper, markers, glitter, or anything to make the card special for the person you want to give it to. When writing the card, be sure to tell the person what you love most about them!

3. Perform acts of kindness! Pick one person and do something for them that lets them know you love and appreciate them. This could be helping with a chore, buying them a gift, or just spending time with them when they’re feeling lonely. Remember that love comes in many forms, so consider how that person will feel your love best. 4. Share your love story! Take time to write down or tell someone the story of your love. This could be about how you met and fell in love with your spouse, the care you have for your kids and grandkids, or a long-cherished friendship that has shown you real love.

TAKE A BREAK

Here’s a not-so-fun fact: January is the most common month for couples to divorce. Why is January ‘divorce month’? No one is entirely sure why so many spouses choose January to cut the knot, but family law attorneys and other experts have floated several theories. • As the first month of the year, January is the perfect time for a fresh start. It may take ending their marriage for spouses to achieve their resolutions and find happiness. • Many couples stay together for their kids. After the high- pressure family holidays of Christmas and New Year’s are over, it may feel easier to initiate a separation. • If you stay married for even one day of the new year, you can file your taxes jointly! This could incentivize couples who separated earlier in the year to wait until January to seek divorce officially. It’s hard to say which of these theories is the real reason behind January’s high divorce rate. It could be a combination of the three. Whatever the reason, the good news is that we’ve made it through “divorce month” and into February — the month of romance. How can you keep your current (or future) marriage strong? We’ve gathered tips from couples married 50 years or longer to help you strengthen your marriage and navigate future divorce months. Reader’s Digest originally published these quotes, but they are so wonderful that we couldn’t resist sharing them! • Zelmyra and Herbert, married 87 years, offered these words of wisdom: “Remember, marriage is not a contest; never keep score.” • Don and Estelle, spouses of 50 years, told RD: “We look back only to the good times. Remember and revel in your successes.” • Jenny and Manny, married 65 years, shared our favorite advice: “When GOODBYE, DIVORCE MONTH. HELLO, ROMANCE! 3 Expert Tips for a Stronger Marriage
