OUR STAFF LOVES OUR VETERANS !

Early last month, one of our favorite patients asked if we could donate some toothbrushes to the Five Star Veterans Center this holiday season. For those

of you who don’t know, this nonprofit organization was founded in 2012 and devotes time, energy, and resources to support and often shelter homeless veterans. As a result of various societal factors and trauma sustained while serving our country, many of our vets find themselves on the brink of homelessness. The Five Star Veterans Center provides the necessary means to assist veterans who suffer from PTSD, depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injuries, and other related mental health issues. They help veterans return to the workforce, reunite with their families, and integrate back into society. Their overarching mission is “to provide displaced military veterans the safe housing and supportive services they need to successfully transition to living independently in a place they call home.”

together over 35 boxes full of treats, hygiene products, and (of course) toothbrushes for these well-deserving veterans. The team at Elite Smiles had a great time putting together these boxes, and we’re so happy we had a small part in helping the Five Star Veterans Center this holiday season. –Steven Freeman

THE BEST PODCASTS TO START in 2019

Obtaining the Perfect Smile

Though podcasts have been around for over a decade, they have only recently found their stride in popular culture. And they don’t all feature nerds talking about “Game of Thrones.” In this form of audio entertainment, there really is something for everyone. A number of podcasts have broken into mainstream pop culture, like “My Favorite Murder,” “This American Life,” and NPR’s “Planet Money.” But these are only the tip of the iceberg. Here are a few lesser-known podcasts that are seriously worth your time.

START SOMETHING FUN: ‘SPIRITS’ The title “Spirits” is a play on the stories told and drinks enjoyed on this podcast. Co-hosts Amanda McLoughlin and Julia Schifini offer a fresh take on myths, legends, and folklore. From Greek classics to the tale of the Javanese Mermaid Queen, these lifelong friends and mythology enthusiasts examine what the stories we tell say about our culture, traditions, and values. If you’re eager to fill your year with something kinda creepy and kinda cool, you can’t go wrong with “Spirits.” Start listening at SpiritsPodcast.com. GO ON AN ADVENTURE: ‘THE FAR MERIDIAN’ Audio dramas are back and thriving in the world of podcasts. “The Far Meridian” explores the story of Peri, a lighthouse keeper whose brother disappeared long ago. Peri is terrified of leaving her home, so she’s never discovered what happened to him. That changes when her lighthouse begins to appear in a new location every morning, initiating her search for her brother. Fantastically fun and painfully real, this is a story about the courage it takes to leave home behind. Join the girl in the lighthouse at TheFarMeridian.com. TACKLE YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS: ‘THE MARIE FORLEO PODCAST’ We all need some advice. Why not get it from someone who knows what they’re talking about? Marie Forleo is an entrepreneur, writer, and philanthropist. And according to Oprah, she’s a thought leader for the next generation. Her mission is to help you become the person you most want to be. On the podcast, Marie and her guests discuss business, relationships, fear, love, and so much more. Get inspired at MarieForleo.com/marietv.

In our last edition, we talked about the benefits of using Invisalign. Now we want to take a moment to compare the cost and required maintenance of traditional braces and invisible aligners, though their prices do vary depending on the severity of each case. The average cost for Invisalign and traditional braces is about the same — between $3,500–$8,000. Invisalign tends to be more expensive to cover the custom-made aligners that gently shift your teeth into place. However, this treatment requires far less maintenance, though the patient needs to be disciplined enough to wear the aligners throughout the day as required. While cheaper, braces need a lot more maintenance. The brackets used to align your teeth are fragile and can easily break due to eating the wrong foods, sustaining an injury to your mouth, flossing or using a toothpick roughly, or brushing your teeth too energetically or incorrectly. A broken bracket is the most recurrent problem for children and adults. Once a bracket breaks, the wire will become loose, often sticking out of your mouth. This can lead to discomfort or even injury if not fixed quickly. Invisalign doesn’t require visits to your orthodontist to fix a broken bracket or get regular adjustments. Depending on the dentist, patients will need to come in for at least two treatments — first to discuss the procedure, and then to pick up the aligners. Afterward, the only reasons for appointments are to ensure the treatment is going well and to make any needed adjustments. At Elite Smiles, we understand how important your smile is to you and the convenience of Invisalign. We are now offering this treatment for $2,998

its mission. As a bonus, the vitamins these veggies contain are great for your gums and bone health. (Though teeth are not bones, they are very similar in composition.) So, follow Peter Rabbit’s lead and get in a daily serving of teeth- brushing vegetables. Think About Your Gums Since the purpose of gum is to be mashed between our teeth for long periods of time, it’s natural to produce buckets of saliva while enjoying a piece. But dentists warn that in order to get the full benefits for your gums and teeth, you should be chewing sugar-free gum to avoid caking your mouth in enamel-gnawing sugars. Although the sugar content in most gum flavors isn’t high enough to completely outweigh the pros of the chewing motion and saliva production, it’s still wise to be mindful of the sugars your favorite gum contains. The best way to get the perfect smile is with regular dental cleanings, brushing, and flossing, but if you’re craving a treat, you can’t beat one that multitasks for you.

Who says multitasking is impossible? Well, brain science does. But dental science says you can enjoy a snack and get some dental cleaning done at the same time. Check out some of these treats that pull double duty as both yummy snacks and superfoods for your smile. Cheese, Please (And Other Dairy Too) In addition to providing your bones and teeth with calcium, cheese, yogurts, and other dairy products can be low in sugar. Dairy lowers the acidity level in your mouth and creates an unfavorable environment for bacteria looking to ruin your perfect smile. Plus, chewing cheese promotes saliva production, which is effectively nature’s toothbrush. As long as you don’t go overboard, dental experts say there’s nothing wrong with cutting the cheese. A Feast Fit for Rabbits Few people get excited about bland treats like celery or carrots, but your teeth just might. The physical action of eating carrots and celery stimulates your mouth to produce more saliva. Plus, the textures of these vegetables can help brush gunk off your gums and pearly whites, aiding your saliva in
