the cost of high living that is wreaking havoc in our generation! The Bible says, “Owe no man anything.”' It is generally agreed that the real thought behind this verse is that we are not to go out and contract debts beyond that which we are able to pay. If you make $300.00 per month and assume debts amounting to $350.00, you are in trouble. How do we think we have the right to call upon God to help us meet our debts when we act in so reck less a fashion? These comments do not have reference1to the matter of pur chasing a home, they deal with selfish desires. In this matter of debts, unfortunate ly, our nation with its staggering na tional debt which ever increases, sets a poor example. There are citizens who no longer say ‘Give me liberty”—they just say “gimme.” It is little wonder that we have become bankrupt both spiritually and financially trying to run a socialistic state. Regardless of what our nation does, no Christian should run up bills all over town. A “deadbeat” w ill instantly bring reproach upon the name of Christ. Do not let Christmas shopping trap you into unhappy consequences for months to come. When I first came to Biola about ten years ago, I had the privilege of being Superintendent of Men and the counselling was interesting and fruit bearing. But there were strange cases as well. I recall one young lad whom I had to call in as he had failed to pay his board and room. The amount which the students pay is a modest one and we had asked, pleaded with, and warned him but still no response. Fi nally, in an interview, I told him that he must give us an answer and he said, “Well, Sir, I can’t pay Biola. You see I had to buy a car, and then I had to get some new clothes. Also, I had to buy an engagement ring, and I am paying on all these things so that I can get married.” He topped the conversation by saying that he would have to sell the car, for which

he had not paid, in order to meet the expenses of the wedding. As an under statement of the year, this young man was far from ready for marriage. A life run like this is not pleasing to the Lord. How much plainer can the Spirit of God make it to us than when He says, “Owe no man anything.” May I just pause long enough here to tell you something which has always been a blessing to my heart. I remem ber, when I was a boy, hearing about the signs which had been placed on the Biola Buildings just after the de pression. The Biola Institute was to go under the auctioneer’s hammer; it was to be sold: liquidated to satisfy credi- H THE MAN NEXT DOOR Jesus died to bring salvation I Fof the rich and for die poor; For men of every tribe and nation— And He includes the man next door. ■ . Debts were in excess of the income. Times were hard. And as the Lord always raises up a man to stand in a gap, God brought to the organiza tion Dr.*Louis T. Talbot who ultimate ly led the School to financial solvency. There were men with him like Mr. Ray Myers, Chairman of our Board of Di rectors and Mr. J. Russell Alder, Busi ness Manager, and through this leader ship the Lord put the School on its feet again. What a testimony this was to the outside world! This is not to say that things have 25
