O ne of the signs of the times in which we are living, is the com­ plete disregard which most people seem to have for law and order. Let us look at several headlines of recent weeks. From San Gabriel, California (our south­ land): “Police tried to enforce a ban against dancing after midnight at a wedding party. Nearly three hundred of the guests attacked the police with broken whiskey bottles and beer cans.” From Los Angeles, “A youth who re­ fused to pay for a ride on the merry- go-round caused a disturbance in a park. When police tried to arrest him, a mob quickly formed and attacked the officers.” Cleveland: “A patrolman was attempt­

ing to talk a man out of committing suicide. The man suddenly turned on him and shot the officer with a pistol.” Kansas City: “A policeman stopped four young men on a dark street and asked what they were doing. One of the youths, nineteen years old, pulled out a gun and shot and killed the officer. ’ New York: “Three teenagers, armed with loaded shotguns, ran a red light at a busy intersection, firing a blast from one gun. A patrolman gave chase and forced the armed youths to stop. Soon he was being howled at and pelted with rocks and beer cans by more than one hundred youths and adults.
