Eighteenth Century Portraits of Women by Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds Eighteenth century artists Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds brought a classically informed style of elegance and fashion to their masterful portraits of the women of Georgian society. During an age of wealth and opulence as Britain rose to world economic dominance, both artists defined the standard for beauty in their paintings of the royal court, stars of the London stage, and the ladies of leisure in their English country estates. Pop Goes the Portrait The 1960s marked a radical turning point among American artists when they replaced abstract expressionism, that had dominated modern art after World War II, with a new way of painting and seeing the human face. Artists such as Andy Warhol celebrated pop culture, consumerism, and celebrity. Chuck Close re-imagined the traditional portrait in a bold new style of painting color to create a new realism. Photographer Cindy Sherman transformed herself into multiple personalities that both mirrored and commented on modern society, particularly the changing roles of women. As each artist re-defined the art of the portrait in bold new ways, they had a profound influence on modern art. BOB POTTER (see bio for “Eighteenth Century Portraits of Women”).
