Secrets, Myths, and Legends of Central Park Within Central Park's 843 acres are at least five man-made waterfalls. Learn the history of New York's most visited park and how it came to exist in the middle of Manhattan nearly 165 years ago. Find out what controversial properties were acquired for this project by means of eminent domain as well as the history of the park’s sculptures, zoo, and buildings. Explore its rich history through this virtual tour that debunks the legends and reveals the hidden gems of a beautiful and functional destination for New York’s residents and tourists alike. GINNY POLEMAN is a graduate of Cornell University, a trained docent for the Municipal Art Society’s official Grand Central Terminal tour, as well as a trained educational guide for 4th through 12th graders at Manhattan’s largest art museum. Walking Tour: Central Park North: Conservatory Gardens, North Woods, and Harlem Meer Explore the north end of Central Park and its stone arched bridges and man-made waterfalls. View the North Woods, the park's most natural section with a variety of landscapes ideal for wandering. Visit the newly renovated Conservatory Garden and the gate that once adorned the mansion of Cornelius Vanderbilt II. See the New Harlem Meer Center, a state-of-the-art facility that replaces and better integrates the former Lasker Rink and Pool into the landscape. Secrets, Myths, and Legends of the Empire State Building Though no longer the tallest in the world, the Empire State Building held the record for forty years from 1931 to 1971 and is the ancestor to all super tall skyscrapers today. It was erected in record time amid the race to be the tallest following the stock market crash of 1929. Find out whether a blimp ever moored at its spire and what really happens if you throw a penny from its top. Learn what came before it, the history of its construction, and other fun facts and interesting stories behind New York’s most recognizable building.
