Walking Tour: Gilded Age Mansions of Fifth Avenue When New York City's wealthiest residents moved uptown to escape the crowded downtown neighborhoods in the late nineteenth century, they built colossal palaces made for fancy-dress balls. View architectural details that included gargoyles, moats, and wrought iron inspired by Italian Renaissance tombs. Learn about the prominent American families such as Pulitzer, Vanderbilt, and Frick that inhabited this prestigious avenue during the Gilded Age. Peek inside the Whitney family mansion, now the Cultural Services for the French Embassy and home to the Albertine, a French/American bookstore.
