Scarsdale Adult School Catalog Spring/Summer 2025
Art Deco's First 100 Years April 28, 2025, officially declared “World Art Deco Day,” marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Paris International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts from which deco takes its name. April also marks the 60th anniversary of New York City’s Landmarks Commission, which now protects the deco treasures that give the city so much of its identity – the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, but also apartment buildings, airline terminals, night clubs, even churches. Once out of fashion, art deco has been rediscovered and reappraised, and today may be New York’s most popular architectural style. Celebrate World Art Deco Day with this illustrated lecture tracing deco’s century-long odyssey. ANTHONY W. ROBINS is an historian and writer specializing in New York City architecture. During a twenty-year stint at the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission he served as Deputy Director of Research and Director of Survey; his work in historic preservation won him a "Rome Prize" from the American Academy in Rome in 1997. Robins currently teaches at NYU and Columbia University, lectures nationally and internationally, and consults on historic preservation projects. He is also the author of books on Grand Central Terminal, the World Trade Center, and the art and architecture of the New York subway system. His most recent book, published in 2017, is New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture .
