Memorial Days (2025) by Geraldine Brooks From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Horse and March is a memoir of grief over the sudden loss of her spouse, Tony Horwitz, also a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, who died at age 60 on Memorial Day in 2019 as he was embarking on a book tour. This moving account details how Brooks processed his death, both the bureaucratic red tape and the emotional impact. Three years into widowhood, she left her home in Martha's Vineyard to stay on a remote island off the coast of her native Australia to mourn and rebuild her life. Though spare, this heartrending memoir captures the symbiotic relationship between Brooks and Horwitz in Brooks's journey towards inner peace. The Mortal and Immortal Life of the Girl from Milan (2021) by Domenico Starnone, English translation in 2024 by Oonagh Stransky This short Italian novel about childhood love, death, and memory is set in Naples in the 1950s. At the beginning of the fiction, the narrator is eight-years old and obsessed with the Milanese girl across the way and the underworld, including the myth of Orpheus. He resents his devoted yet uneducated grandmother who had nurtured his imagination. Enter Ghost (2024) by Isabella Hammad In the aftermath of her divorce, a British Palestinian actress travels to Israel to visit her sister, regain her equilibrium, and restart her stalled career. Once there, she joins a West Bank staging of Hamlet and reacquaints herself with her family's homeland. As she comes to terms with her troubled marriage to a director, she begins to understand through adult eyes the occupied land that she left as an adolescent, undergoing a political awakening as well as a personal one.
