Dream State (2025) by Eric Puchner This multigenerational saga set in a fictionalized valley in Montana spans fifty years, beginning with an anticipated lakeside wedding that is promptly upended by a love triangle and the outbreak of a norovirus. The ramifications of that summer's events and the climate change impacting the region dictate the rest of the novel. As the characters age from their twenties into their seventies, the characters' lives shift through emotions and relationships set against the backdrop of a dystopian landscape. Broken Country (2025) by Clare Leslie Hall A combination love story and thriller, this Reese’s book club pick toggles between Beth’s past, in which Gabriel, her first love left her broken-hearted, and her contented present with her kind, loving husband Frank. The present timeline begins as Beth and Frank work together on the family farm, two years after the death of their nine year old son. When Gabriel returns to her village with his own son, Beth is pulled back into Gabriel’s life with devastating consequences. Emotional complexities of misplaced guilt, human fallibility, secrets, regrets, atonement, and forgiveness crescendo with plot twists that culminate in a murder trial. Becoming Madam Secretary (2024) by Stephanie Dray The latest historical women’s fiction from Stephanie Dray, an award-winning author, concerns the rise of Frances Perkins into the male-dominated political world. Perkins devoted herself to issues faced by women, children, the poor, and the elderly. A chance meeting at a party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was, at the time, a young lawyer, led to an historic partnership that took them both from New York to the White House, with Perkins serving as the first female Secretary of Labor in 1933. This linear biographical novel includes details of her family life and friendships while illustrating her no-nonsense approach and many professional accomplishments. The Emperor of Gladness (2025) by Ocean Vuong Set in Connecticut, a nineteen-year-old boy on the verge of suicide is interrupted and befriended by an elderly widow succumbing to dementia. He becomes her caretaker, working at a diner to support them both, and his fellow diner workers become his unexpected family, united by circumstance on the fringes of society. Poetic, dramatic, profound, and moving, this fiction was one of the most highly anticipated releases for 2025 and is an Oprah Book Club pick.
