un défilé de bicyclettes s’est rendu de l’école secondaire St Thomas Aquinas au champ de foire, marquant ainsi le début officiel de la journée. Des jeux, de la barbe à papa et des structures gonflables ont été installés sur le terrain de baseball, tandis que Double Edge jouait de la musique en direct sur la scène. Diverses possibilités de restauration étaient proposées par Junior and the Kid et les Russell Scouts, ainsi qu’un autre jardin de la bière à partir de midi. À 13 heures, tous les festivaliers se sont levés pour chanter l’hymne national, puis le conseiller Marc Lalonde a prononcé le discours en remplacement du maire Pierre Leroux, qui ne pouvait être présent. Les festivités de la fête du Canada se sont poursuivies jusqu’à 22 h, heure à laquelle l’école secondaire de Russell a présenté un dernier feu d’artifice pour terminer la soirée en beauté.
Cette fête du Canada a été assez chaude et humide, mais heureusement la pluie s’est arrêtée suffisamment longtemps pour que la journée soit agréable. Les résidents et les visiteurs ont rempli le champ de foire de Russell le 1er juillet pour célébrer la fête du Canada, organisée par la Société agricole de Russell et le Club Lion de Russell. Le coup d’envoi des festivités a été donné la veille lors de la fête du 30 juin, qui s’est déroulée de 19 h à minuit et qui comprenait des spectacles de Thompson Live, une concession de Junior and the Kid et un jardin de bières. Le lendemain matin, le 1er juillet, la Légion de Russell a organisé un déjeuner gratuit pour la fête du Canada dans l’aréna de Russell. Alyssa Gervais was awarded the presti- gious Governor General’s Academic Bronze Medal, which is awarded to the student with the highest grade point average (GPA) in the graduating class. Russell Township councillor Marc Lalonde also took to the stage to say how proud he was of each graduate there that night, and how he was sure they would go on to do great things no matter where they ended up. After that, valedictorians Zoë Tingley and Paige Longval took the microphone to speak to their friends, family, and fellow graduates. They spoke of the past, of the trials they faced during their high school careers and the difficulties made worse by COVID-19. They spoke of the future, of where they and their friends were headed next. But most of all, they spoke of the present, of that moment, and how proud they were to be standing there in front of all the graduates that made it. The graduates threw their hats, and spread their wings.

St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School’s class of 2023 celebrated their graduation. St Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School (STA) saw its latest crop of seniors graduate on June 27, celebrating the end of their high school careers and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Whether they’re headed to post-secondary school, directly into the workforce, or out into the world, the education and connections they’ve gained will serve them well. “Your hard work, dedication, and resilience have paid off. You’ve grown, learned, and accomplished so much during your journey here at St. Thomas Aquinas CHS,” said STA over Facebook. “Embrace this milestone, and remember that the world is yours to conquer.” Family and friends packed into the STA auditorium to witness the ceremony and support their loved ones.
