Community is Central for CWU Teacher Academies

Progress Report Regarding CWU’s Climate Action Plan and Integrating Sustainability in the Curriculum

The CWU Teacher Academies program partners with over 30 high schools, primarily in Central Washington and near CWU Centers, to recruit and support future educators, with a focus on strengthening the teacher pipeline in underserved communities. Aligned with Engagement and Initiatives 1.1 and 1.2, the program fosters cross-campus collaboration, community engagement, and high-impact practices that build meaningful connections between students, faculty, and local schools to develop a more representative and resilient educator workforce.

The Office of Sustainability will share a high- level update on CWU’s Climate Action Plan, highlighting progress toward greenhouse gas reduction goals and key objectives like renewable energy and waste reduction, along with current priorities, challenges, and student-led initiatives. The Sustainability in the Curriculum team will also present recent efforts to support faculty in integrating sustainability into coursework, including examples, results, and upcoming training opportunities Strategic Plan Initiative: Value: Stewardship Goal 1: Promote sustainable practices and responsible stewardship of land and resources to support an ecologically healthy and socially just world, while respecting and honoring Indigenous peoples. Initiative 1.1: Develop and implement a comprehensive, university-wide Sustainability and Climate Change Action Plan, which incorporates environmental, social, and economic considerations into university operations, infrastructure, and academic programs in collaboration with the local community. Initiative 1.2: Integrate sustainability into a university-wide curriculum to provide students with the knowledge, skills, competencies, and values necessary to shape an equitable and sustainable future.

Goal 1: Amplify and elevate the university’s relationship with local and regional communities. Initiative 1.1 : Integrate our strategic planning and activities with the cities within Kittitas County and with the county as a whole, as well as with other cities and counties in our region. Initiative 1.2: Integrate our planning and activities at the Centers with the communities local to the Centers and include the Centers with campus-wide initiatives.
