OCTOBER 2024
Why This Halloween Will Be Particularly Special Pumpkins, ‘Paw Patrol,’ and Parenting
It’s October, so cue the costume shopping and candy consumption. Halloween is coming, and this year promises to be an adventure for our oldest, Isabella. Now that she’s 3 years old and has experienced a big leap in her language development, Halloween will be on a whole new level for her. As she understands more and more around her, she’s been watching more movies and TV, which means we have a plethora of character costumes to choose from. This is the first Halloween Isabella is genuinely excited to dress up for. In previous years, it was more about us choosing a cute costume for her, but now, she has strong opinions about what she wants to be. Recently, she’s been enamored with various characters from movies and cartoons. Initially, she was obsessed with Elsa from “Frozen,” and we considered dressing up the entire family as characters from the movie. Then , her interest shifted to “Moana,” and we almost went down that route. But now, she’s all about “Paw Patrol” and loves Skye’s character. So, unless she changes her mind again — which will most likely be the case — we plan to be a family of “Paw Patrol” characters. To be honest, “Paw Patrol” has become a bit of a lifesaver, especially when my wife, Priscila, or I need to tend to our younger daughter, Rebecca. While it may not be the most engaging show for adults, it’s a small
When it comes to Disney princesses, Isabella already has a wardrobe of dresses she cycles through nearly every day. Snow White, Tiana, Ariel — you name it, she has the dress. Why she can’t be one of these princesses
for Halloween is beyond me!
This year, we plan to attend a trunk-or- treat event at our church. It’s not as old school as the door-

to-door trick-or-treating I remember from my childhood, but it’s a safe and fun way for Isabella to enjoy the holiday. I still recall my Halloween nights, dressed up as G.I. Joe, running from house to house, and eating as much candy as possible. The decorations were always over the top, and the whole neighborhood enjoyed the fun. These days, fewer kids seem to be out trick-or-treating, but I want Isabella to experience the same excitement and joy. We might also take Isabella to a nearby neighborhood known for its festive Halloween spirit. She’s already warned us that eating too much chocolate makes her “go loca loca,” which is hilarious and adorable at the same time. Halloween will be a bit different from my childhood days — more structured, maybe, but still filled with the same kind of joy and wonder. Priscila and I are looking forward to seeing Isabella’s face light up as she experiences the magic of Halloween. And who knows? Maybe next year, we’ll finally convince our HOA to let us put up some spooky decorations in the front yard!
price to pay for a few moments of peace. Plus, some of the movies she likes, like “Moana,” have more narrative depth that we can actually enjoy alongside her. Isabella also loves other movies and shows like “Minions,” “Boss Baby,” “Spider- Man and Friends,” and “Gabby’s Dollhouse.” We try to steer clear of “Cocomelon” because, honestly, it drives us a bit crazy.

EYES TO THE SKY A Family Guide to Birdwatching
The great outdoors is full of incredible wildlife and nature, just waiting for us to get out and explore. Whether you’re going to your local arboretum, a national park, or even your own backyard, you can always find something unique to look at. Sometimes, turning toward the sky will provide an amazing opportunity to see something special. We can find birds almost anywhere. If you’re looking for a new way to keep your kids entertained while educating them, looking for birds can be a great family bonding activity. Start by researching the birds in your area, both permanent residents and those migrating. You’ll likely see common birds in your backyard or around the neighborhood, but you may need to travel to a local park to see some of the more unique species. At first, your kids may need some help finding different birds. Binoculars might be too difficult to use, so it’s up to you to point them in the right direction. Look out for nests, cracked seeds, and other signs indicating birds are nearby. You don’t have to use only your eyes when searching the skies and trees for birds; listen intently, too! Tracking birds through their calls will help alert you to the species you’re searching for and where to look.
your hometown or the area you’re visiting. You can get specific with unique species or keep it broad by having them look for hawks, ducks, etc. Let your child take the lead, encouraging them to point out birds they see or hear instead of relying on you to tell them. You can even encourage your kids to mimic the different birdcalls they hear.
Birdwatching is a great way to get your kids outdoors exploring nature. It could even lead to a full-time passion or career in the future.
To keep your kids’ attention as you bird watch, you may need to make a game out of it. Create a scavenger hunt to find five birds in
When Old Injuries Meet New Accidents How Preexisting Conditions Impact Your Claim
Common examples include chronic illnesses, previous injuries, or ongoing medical conditions. Insurers often scrutinize these conditions to minimize payouts, arguing that the injury or pain a claimant is experiencing is due to their preexisting condition rather than the accident itself. Legal Strategies to Ensure Fair Compensation 1. Comprehensive Medical Documentation: It’s essential to have detailed medical records that clearly outline your health before and after the accident. This documentation helps differentiate between your preexisting condition and the new injuries caused by the accident. Regular medical check-ups and honest communication with your health care provider can strengthen your case. 2. Expert Medical Testimony : An expert medical witness can provide a professional opinion on how the accident aggravated your preexisting condition. Their testimony can be critical in demonstrating the extent of
the injury and the additional pain and suffering caused by the accident. 3. Personal Testimony: Your account of how the accident has impacted your daily life and worsened your preexisting condition can be powerful. Keeping a
One of the most significant roadblocks to pursuing a personal injury claim is dealing with preexisting medical conditions. These conditions can complicate the process and potentially impact the compensation you receive. Understanding how preexisting conditions affect personal injury claims and knowing the legal strategies to address these issues are crucial for ensuring fair compensation. How to Overcome Insurer Tactics Insurance companies often try to use preexisting conditions to their advantage. A skilled personal injury attorney can counter these tactics by presenting compelling evidence and expert testimonies to ensure you receive the compensation you deserve. Preexisting conditions can complicate personal injury claims but don’t discredit your right to fair compensation. elevating them from sideshows to immersive, technologically advanced experiences.
The Birth of the Modern Amusement Park
The era of Coney Island’s dueling theme parks was short-lived, lasting only from 1904 to 1911, but its impact can still be felt today. The parks’ relentless one-upmanship drove the rapid evolution of the amusement park industry, laying the foundation for the iconic destination Coney Island has become. What began as a vulgar locale became a glittering symbol of American ingenuity and the pursuit of wholesome fun. While the tactics of these rival parks may have been underhanded, the lasting legacy of their fierce competition is undeniable. The rapid innovations, technological advancements, and shifts in public perception from this crucible of competition continue to shape the amusement park experience today.
Stealing Ideas and Underhanded Tactics
Tilyou’s success soon drew the attention of rival park operators. In 1902, he lured away the founders of the popular “A Trip to the Moon” attraction from the upcoming Luna Park. These underhanded tactics were common, as the parks constantly copied each other’s rides and acts to one-up the competition. Rapid Innovation Drives Change This competitive spirit drove rapid innovation at Coney Island. Over just a few years, the parks introduced groundbreaking new attractions like the Rotating Barrel, Thunderbolt roller coaster, and the world’s largest Ferris wheel. They transformed the public’s perception of amusement parks,
In the early 20th century, Coney Island was the beating heart of America’s burgeoning amusement park industry. Three rival theme parks — Steeplechase Park, Luna Park, and Dreamland — engaged in fierce, cutthroat competition that dramatically reshaped this iconic destination. A Tawdry Reputation Transformed Coney Island’s reputation was once far from wholesome. Known as “Sodom by the Sea,” it was considered a tawdry, vice- filled destination. That began to change
