There are two types of standards: Achievement Standards and Unit Standards, both worth credits.
Achievement standards can be assessed internally (during the school year) or externally (through a portfolio or piece of work being sent away for external marking or an exam towards the end of the school year). Students can gain the standard at Achieved, Merit or Excellence Levels. Unit Standards are also made up of credits and are all internally assessed. Traditionally, you can only receive an achieved or not
achieved grade. A small number of unit standards can be achieved, merit, and excellence. Credits are the value each standard ofers if achieved, irrespective of the grade it is completed at.
Certificate Endorsement Students can gain their NCEA Certificate endorsed with Merit if they gain 50 credits at Merit or above or endorsed with Excellence if they gain 50 or more credits at Excellence.
Option Subjects - In year 11, students choose five subjects. Of the five subjects, two subjects MUST be: ● English ● Mathematics.
Students should choose carefully and consider their future aspirations. If students are unsure, they should take a range of subjects, keeping their options open. Students are encouraged to discuss options with the TiC as well as meet with the school's careers advisor.

Introduction
This course involves working alongside local industries keen to establish a work-ready qualification unique to Kawerau. The course will be part of the Gateway programme, where work placements are a compulsory part of the course. These will ideally be on the day of this academy, where students will attend a work placement in at least two industries at various times of the year over the two-year course. Students will be supported in the classroom to develop foundation skills employees have identified as necessary for the workplace. The aim is for this to be a two-year programme that
prepares the student for the local workforce. * indicate standards that require a placement.
