Introduction
Learners credited with this Unit Standard can read to make sense of written texts, read with critical awareness, and read for different purposes. Outcome1 Read to make sense of written texts. Performance Criteria 1.1 Process information and identify important ideas. 1.2 Make links within texts using text structures and language features. 1.3 Identify the meaning of vocabulary essential to understanding the text. Outcome2 Read written texts with critical awareness. Performance Criteria 2.1 Identify and make links between audience, purpose, and writer point-of-view. 2.2 Evaluate the reliability and credibility of the text and/or the writer. Outcome3 Read written texts for different purposes. Performance Criteria 3.1 Select and evaluate the relevance of texts according to the reader’s purpose. 3.2 Locate and use information across a range of texts according to the reader’s purpose. The assessment is digitally assessed and is offered twice a year (June & October); students should sit the assessment when they are academically ready, working at upper level 4 / lower Level 5 of the New Zealand Curriculum.

The Common Assessment Activity (CAA) is a requirement for all levels of NCEA achievement. Akonga can sit the assessment as many times as required, but it is a requirement.
