AppalachianPT: Specialization; The Good, Bad, & Ugly

THERE IS HOPE FOR YOU& THIS DREADED ELBOWOF YOURS

(continued from outside) The bottom line is you must have balance with any extremity to keep one side from over stressing the other. Once a soft tissue structure is injured it will swell ever so slightly and begin the process of limiting proper blood flow and as a country boy would say, “it just gets worser from there.” It may not be from a specific incident but micro trauma from a day in and out occupation. The good news is there IS hope for you and this dreaded elbow of yours. It only goes to reason if overuse has caused the problem, giving you a set of exercises will be adding gas to the fire. Deepmassage, fascial work as well as stretching withmaybe either heat or ice and some home stretching will usually get you through this. There are also straps, braces, taping techniques, injections and the lists goes on that can be used aswell. Obviously the problemstructure/s needs to be identified and if it is ornery, dry needlingmay also be in the solution. The affected structure needs rest, helpwith decreasing inflammation, stretching back to normal length and then moved back into activity. The sooner this is addressed, usually the better and quicker the patient responds. Come to think about it, it is usually that way with everything we see and treat. So the next time you have soreness or pain in your elbow from being dragged down the street, think about possibilities with stressing structures that are usually worked pretty hard already. Give it some rest. Maybe ice and avoid causing more pain with activity. Maybe you are finally at a breaking point and will need some professional help. Whatever the cause, our goal is to get you back to your normal activities and at a pre-injury work level. Then you can decide if you want to play your favorite sport again, either tennis or golf.

PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHTS

“My left hand had its strength back!” “I had a stroke and I was left with weakness in my left hand. I came to Appalachian Physical Therapy as it was suggested from my wife who had been there before and was happy with the care she received. I will have to say Anne Baker is a great professional and is just all-round very nice in her therapy. The whole staff was very great also. By the time I was finished with my treatments, my left hand had its strength back and was as good as my right hand. THANKS SO MUCH to Anne Baker and the staff at Appalachian Physical Therapy in Broadway!” - Marshall T. “I am thankful to Karen and the staff for their help and expertise!” “I appreciate the staff and especially Karen’s dedication and commitment helping

me get back to doing the things that are important to me like running! Karen always took the time to understand how I was feeling and what needed to be done to address my discomfort and/or pain. I am thankful to Karen and the staff for their help and expertise! I feel like I can do everything I use to do before my injury!” - Christine M. “Linden provided the appropriate therapy!” “For the past three months, physical therapist Linden Daiss provided physical therapy for my reverse total shoulder replacement. Therapy for this surgery is not an option and requires a therapist who is knowledgeable and methodical with this treatment. Linden provided the appropriate therapy along with the encouragement and support to regain the functional ability of my shoulder. My most sincere appreciation to Linden for my recovery.” - Doug T.
