3. Awards or honors for teaching/mentoring are important indicators of teaching excellence. 4. Development and organization of new and innovative teaching or evaluation methods, directorship of a medical student clerkship or of a residency program, as well as participation on departmental and college educationcommittees Evidence of excellence in administrative service include: 1. Participation on departmental, hospital, college, university and regional committees related to clinical care, education and/or administration. 2. Administrative roles in the candidate's department, College of Medicine, and/or relevant regional or national organizations. 3. Ad hoc review for clinical journals. PROFESSOR Candidates for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Associate Professor. Candidates are usually at the Associate Professor level for at least 7 years prior to their application for promotion to the Professor level. Appointment or promotion as Professor in the Clinical Service Track requires a combination of excellence in patient care and a thriving clinical practice, as well as contributions to the academic unit. At this level, national recognition as a general consultant in the specialty is required. Leadership roles in the CoM and national organizations, as well as invitations to participate in national and international conferences, workshops, and symposia, lend evidence of the individual's clinical expertise. On-going significant contributions to education are required. Additional participation in research and the administrative affairs of the department, college and university will add support to the application for promotion toProfessor. Evidence of excellence in clinical service include: 1. Board certification and maintenance of certification is expected for the primary subspecialty of practice except in rare circumstances. 2. Evaluations from the candidate's peers, colleagues, students, patients, division chief and/or department director outlining the clinical and service capabilities of the individual. Physicians who refer patients to the faculty member, as well as colleagues who work closely with him or her, have a particularly valuable perspective. 3. Local and regional recognition of clinical expertise, including invitations for speaking at clinical seminars, courses and symposia. Patient referrals and requests for consultation also provide evidence of clinical excellence.
