Lighting Recommendations
Using micromoles per square meter per second (umol·m -2 ·sec -1 ) allows us to provide more accurate light recommendations while using the latest in light measurement technology. Footcandles are a unit of measure of how the human eye perceives light while µmol . m -2. sec -1 are the unit of measure of light plants perceive and utilize for growth. Here are some common recommendations in footcandles and the approximate equivalent in micromoles for comparison:

Dry Substrate is tan to gray in color, crumbles to dust, pulls away from sides of container
Medium Substrate is light brown in color, no water can be extracted, and substrate crumbles
Moist Substrate is brown in color, strongly squeezing the substrate will extract drops of water
Wet Substrate is dark brown but not shiny, no free water seen at the surface, when pressed water drips easily
Saturated Substrate is dark brown to shiny, free water on surface, water drips freely from the bottom of container

Comments: Irrigate early in the day to avoid leaf scorch when high light levels are present. Allowing the soil surface to dry between irrigations will reduce algae growth. Light is not essential for emergence, but additional light at 14 hours per day will greatly enhance germination and early growth, and will prevent tuber formation. Maintain high humidity until day 14 when it can be reduced to around 50%. Once out of the chamber, it is helpful to cover trays with Reemay ® or similar to help retain humidity and reduce irrigation frequency. Avoid irrigating with cold water. 65° F (18° C) is ideal.

When irrigating, use low pressure/volume nozzles/breakers to avoid moving seeds around in the cell. If the daily light integral (DLI) is less than 12 mol·m -2 ·day -1 , adding supplemental HID light will promote a more uniform crop.

288-cell tray pH: 5.5–5.9 SME 0.5–0.75 mS/cm Comments: Tuberous begonias will form tubers and single flowers under short days so providing night interruption lighting for a total of at least 14 hours is necessary, even in the plug stage. During the early stages of growth, irrigate very gently since Begonia seedlings are very small and heavy watering will disturb the roots. This is a relatively long plug crop so keeping the media too wet can lead to excessive algae growth. Pelleted 7–8 weeks 1 No 7–10 days 73–78 °F (23–26 °C) Required for germination

Keeping media pH at 5.8 or lower will help reduce the likelihood of Thielaviopsis infections. Although Cora ® XDR performs exceptionally well without the use of fungicides for the control of Aerial Phytophthora, we still recommend chemical rotations as part of a disease resistance management plan against a constantly evolving pathogen. Use Subdue Maxx ® or Segway ® drenches in the plug stage for disease management, and use Medallion ® drenches with rotations of Heritage ® , Micora ® and Segovis ® sprays during the finishing stage. The recommended chemistries also provide additional protection against other diseases that vinca are susceptible to, including Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Thielaviopsis.
