The Classics Ontario, Canada
Most KW Cares grants serve those facing unexpected life-altering circumstances, like a cancer diagnosis and loss of insurance. If a team member or an associate’s qualifying family member is experiencing financial hardship due to a sudden emergency, KW Cares can provide relief. Many of our grant recipients are battling cancer. These are just two of their stories.
Aaron Classic joined the Hamilton, Ontario, Market Center as an agent in 2022. That August, Kim, his wife and the mother of their two children, found a lump in her breast. I could tell the moment the ultrasound tech came in. She kept clicking on the scan—click, click, click—then she said ‘I’ll be right back.’ At that point, I just knew.” —Kim Classic
Kim was diagnosed with Stage 3 Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma. She received 8 sessions of chemotherapy over 16 weeks, underwent a double mastectomy, and then began radiation treatment. Her medical team chose an aggressive treatment plan, which left her exhausted and in need of help at home. Aaron was unable to work due to caregiving for Kim and their young children. Thankfully, medical expenses have been covered under OHIP and a supplemental insurance policy, but that didn’t take care of all the other expenses the family faced. So Aaron’s Market Center referred him to KW Cares. We were able to provide funds to keep their family going while Aaron is caring for Kim.

Kristen Oktar Chattanooga, Tennessee
On November 17, 2022, 40-year-old Kristen Oktar went in for a routine colonoscopy. The results showed a mass in her colon, and a biopsy confirmed Stage IIIC colon cancer, which had spread to 15 of her lymph nodes. “I’m just so grateful. I wish I could hug everybody that’s behind the scenes on this, because it’s been a godsend.” —Kristen Oktar
Kristen was recently divorced and lost the insurance she had through her spouse. Her only option was a COBRA policy—at $750 a month just for the premiums. And that didn’t cover the cost of the actual treatments. Her team encouraged her to apply for a KW Cares grant and she was awarded a grant to cover the insurance premiums so she can continue to get the care she needs.
After months of grueling treatment, Kristen completed her chemotherapy in June of 2023. She is now in remission.

Venkat Chinni KWRI
KW Cares supports not only KW Family members but also qualifying spouses or domestic partners, children, parents, and siblings facing financial hardship due to a number of life-altering circumstances. When a family member is struggling with something like unmanageable medical bills for necessary treatment, KW Cares is there.
KW team member Venkat Chinni has always been close to his older brother, Raghu Nikhil Chinni. In early 2020, Raghu Nikhil and his wife, Harika, traveled to India on a family visit. What was supposed to be a two-week trip turned into two years due to COVID-19. Because of his prolonged absence and mass layoffs at his company, Raghu Nikhil was let go and lost his H-1 VISA status. Raghu Nikhil was finally able to plan a return home when he was granted
his student visa to pursue a PhD in Computer Science.
Two days after his admission, on June 27, 2022, Raghu Nikhil and Harika were involved in a massive multi-bus accident. His spine was crushed, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down, with limited mobility in his upper limbs. Harika sustained a concussion and shoulder and spinal fractures. Returning to the US to attend his PhD program was no longer an option. The couple did not have medical insurance and India doesn’t have a universal healthcare plan so his brother, Venkat, has been the main financial provider for his family. Venkat and his father are fully bearing the weight of the medical bills

without any additional support. but they didn’t have adequate resources for therapy and rehab.
“I’m immensely grateful to be part of this amazing company that treats everyone like family.” —Venkat Chinni with him every day on muscle building exercises and coordination activities, such as catching a ball. There is hope that he may regain more use of his limbs as he continues rehab.
KW Cares helped cover international medical bills and treatment options so Raghu Nikhil can get back to living life.
“I didn’t even know if help [for my brother] was an option… The financial help that KW Cares provides is out-of-this world. I don’t know any other company that extends help to family and siblings.” —Venkat Chinni
It’s a slow process, but physical therapy is working. Raghu Nikhil is able to hold a cup of water, and his therapists are working

KW Cares responded to nine different disasters in 2023, the largest being the Maui Wildfires. In addition, KW Cares continued to provide grants and assistance for KW Family members whose lives and homes were impacted by the effects of 2022’s Hurricane Ian. Also, for the first time, KW Cares was able to send a staff member to the National Hurricane Conference, held in New Orleans in 2023, to expand our knowledge of disaster response. We’re committed to attending every year so we can learn more about hurricane preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation in order to better serve our KW Family.

GRANTS OVERVIEW
2023 ANNUAL REPORT | KW CARES
Financial Statement
The Heartbeat of the Culture of Caring
In 2023, we were grateful to be spared the need to respond to a natural disaster of the financial magnitude of Hurricanes Ian or Ida, like the two years prior. Because of that, and the faithful support of our donors, we only needed to pull a few thousand dollars from our reserves at the end of the year. That’s something we should all be proud of in such a challenging real estate market! However, should a major disaster strike in the coming months, the revenue received in 2023 would not cover a significant relief response. And we’ve learned that we are unlikely to see two consecutive years without considerable need for emergency grants for disaster relief . Please consider making a financial gift in 2024 to ensure we are prepared to protect the KW Family.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
In Memory of Kathy Neu We mourn the loss of an incredible woman, leader, and friend: Kathy Neu.
Kathy joined the KW Family in 1993 and in her 30 years with us, she served in many esteemed positions within this great organization, including:
The first Team Leader of the Lake Travis Market Center • The Director of Franchise Operations for KWRI • The President of KW Luxury
But the role for which she was best known was that of Executive Director and Board Member of KW Cares .
She poured her heart and soul into this role and helped KW Cares grow from a small organization into the large thriving nonprofit it is today!
Kathy was a force of nature; her generous heart and sharp wit made her a unique joy to be around. We miss her spunk and her spirit of service. She brightened all our staff and Board meetings with her gregarious laugh, Southern charm, and commitment to doing all she could to benefit the KW Family.
In her honor, we’ve established the
Kathy Neu Philanthropy Award
to be presented at Family Reunion annually, which will acknowledge a KW associate for their philanthropic work in support of the KW Cares mission. In this way, Kathy will live on forever in our hearts and be celebrated each and every year.
