Most KW Cares grants serve those facing unexpected life-altering circumstances, like a cancer diagnosis and loss of insurance. If a team member or an associate’s qualifying family member is experiencing financial hardship due to a sudden emergency, KW Cares can provide relief. Many of our grant recipients are battling cancer. These are just two of their stories.

Aaron Classic joined the Hamilton, Ontario, Market Center as an agent in 2022. That August, Kim, his wife and the mother of their two children, found a lump in her breast. I could tell the moment the ultrasound tech came in. She kept clicking on the scan—click, click, click—then she said ‘I’ll be right back.’ At that point, I just knew.” —Kim Classic

Kim was diagnosed with Stage 3 Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma. She received 8 sessions of chemotherapy over 16 weeks, underwent a double mastectomy, and then began radiation treatment. Her medical team chose an aggressive treatment plan, which left her exhausted and in need of help at home. Aaron was unable to work due to caregiving for Kim and their young children. Thankfully, medical expenses have been covered under OHIP and a supplemental insurance policy, but that didn’t take care of all the other expenses the family faced. So Aaron’s Market Center referred him to KW Cares. We were able to provide funds to keep their family going while Aaron is caring for Kim.
