Kristen Oktar Chattanooga, Tennessee

On November 17, 2022, 40-year-old Kristen Oktar went in for a routine colonoscopy. The results showed a mass in her colon, and a biopsy confirmed Stage IIIC colon cancer, which had spread to 15 of her lymph nodes. “I’m just so grateful. I wish I could hug everybody that’s behind the scenes on this, because it’s been a godsend.” —Kristen Oktar

Kristen was recently divorced and lost the insurance she had through her spouse. Her only option was a COBRA policy—at $750 a month just for the premiums. And that didn’t cover the cost of the actual treatments. Her team encouraged her to apply for a KW Cares grant and she was awarded a grant to cover the insurance premiums so she can continue to get the care she needs.

After months of grueling treatment, Kristen completed her chemotherapy in June of 2023. She is now in remission.
