Guest speakers include Ka- ren Sparks, an Internet specialist and educator, and OPP Const. Serge Gauthier. Topics covered during the evening include: risks children may encounter in cyberspace, how to help them recognize and avoid Internet predators,, how to deal with cyber- bullying, and safe use of social networks to protect their own privacy and identity. the school lunch program is now supplemented with a breakfast program as well to help children from families in need. The board also reviewed information from the Toronto Foundation for Student Success that indicates being able to achieve Grade 10 in high school is a good predictor on the chances of a student making gradua- tion. The foundation’s research also indicated that a good morning breakfast correlates with student academic achievement and graduation rates. The board voted to support a resolution from the Ontario Public School Boards As- sociation (OPSBA) calling on the federal
government to create a national nutrition program that would operate through the health and agriculture ministries. The focus of the program would be to ensure all students in schools have a healthy breakfast at the start of their school day with the twin goals of ensuring good nutri- tion and reducing the risk of obesity. The OPSBA wants the federal government to work with various stakeholder groups in the country, including those representing the agricul- ture and health sectors, on programs that both stimulate economic development while also ensuring good nutrition for children in school.
The old adage has it that breakfast is the most important part of the day. Some think that a good breakfast may be the key to whether or not some students are able to graduate. The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) wants the federal government to set up a national nutrition program for children. UCDSB trustees noted during a recent session that Canada is one of the few industrialized countries in the world that does not have a national nutrition program for children and youth.
