Cover Photo - Located south of Oconto, Nebraska, in the Buffalo area, the Quitmeyer family has been raising cattle and farming the same land since John Henry Quitmeyer settled it in 1906. Today, Casey and his wife, Crystal, proudly represent the fifth generation, while raising the sixth generation. The Quitmeyer operation includes row crops, small grains, hay, and cover crops, along with a predominantly Angus cow herd. Casey and Crystal are committed to producing cattle that are low-input, easy-fleshing, and capable of performing on native range. Their focus remains on producing high-quality steer calves while retaining the majority of heifers for development into productive bred females.

Producers, DO IT YOUR WAY! Thanks again for your potential interest in our cattle program. We have tried for 46 years. Lori and I started with one Angus cow in 1977, two jobs, all rented land. Lots of bumps along the way - just like all of you. It’s a fast paced world, changes happen every few minutes in everything and we all have to land on our feet as much as we can. Our Angus breeding program has remained pretty simple - some say pretty boring, and behind, because we don’t chase single traits. Maybe they are right - we tend to believe that fads (extremes) have plagued the beef industry for nearly a century. It takes years, be- cause of generation turnover, to play out! We take a slower approach and realize EPDs are a tool only, common sense is a tool, long term profit is demanded to stay in business for our customers. Purebred breeders can jump from extremes pretty easy, at the risk of their customers livelihood. We haven’t, nor will we, do that to our custom- ers. The current trend of fat cattle extended harvest time to 18-20 months, horribly fat cattle, yield grade 4 & 5 cattle hovering 20% or more?? Doesn’t make sense to us for the extra death loss, cripples, efficiency cost to put fat on etc. Pounds are important, but red meat production is also important. Work is being done on a new system of yield grading. The current system was put in place in the 1960’s. We do not believe one breed can solve all the answers. Use of hybrid vigor, in a planned program can make extra money in many ways. Those hybred females can add to the bottom line. There are niche markets for females etc. with straight bred cattle also many options for commercial programs are available. Do what works best for you. DO IT YOUR WAY - we just try to supply options and parts of poten- tial pieces, you decide your direction. That’s why we started Charo- lais in 2000, Copperheads in 2018, and have tried to keep our Angus maternal balanced for 40 plus years. Thanks for your interest. Galen

This has proven to be a workable option for both parties. We believe the beef business is about working together. In some cases the breeders may show other than Fink on the registration certificate, but rest assured they are guaranteed with the same genetics, service and conditions. Strategic Planning
Make a great maternal herd the ranch level. The cows have these characteristics: very good fertility, longevity, good udders, good feet and legs providing good locomotion, dis- ease and parasite resistance, calving ease; young age at puberty, good dis- position, and great mothering ability. Several steps can be taken to im- prove maternal traits in herds:
I am aware of only a few great maternal herds. I am sure there are some of which I am unaware. However, there are not nearly enough. By great maternal herds I mean those that achieve pregnancy rates of 92% to 96% through good years and bad, with little hay feed- ing and minimal supplementation of protein and minerals. There are many herds that get good conception rates through reli- ance on much winter hay feeding, and good doses of supplemental pro- tein and minerals, and sometimes even grain and total mixed rations. Those are not great maternal herds because there is a high probability that they are unprofitable — espe- cially in the tough years. As I continue to work as a speak- er for livestock producer meetings, I hear more and more stories of herds where conception rates were in a range of 90% to 96% a decade or two ago. Now they struggle to get con- ception rates exceeding 80%. As I question further, it becomes apparent that their cows have got- ten too big, are trying to produce more milk than their environments will allow, and have too little or even no heterosis. These cows have lower body condition in spite of often being fed much more in the wintertime. The owners are now either running fewer cows or buying more feed. The great maternal herds are those that are more profitable at
• Over time, reduce dependence on fed feeds and supplementation. • Keep most of the heifer calves and expose them to bulls and — per- haps over several years — shorten the breeding season to as little as 24 days. • For cows, gradually, shorten the calving season to 30 days, but don’t shorten the breeding season. Create the discipline to cull the late-calving or late-bred cows before the next calving season. • To make good maternal cows, only select bulls whose dams always calve as a result of first-cycle concep- tion. If you select a bull from a first- calf heifer, ensure she also calved in the first cycle as a 3-year-old before making the selection. Then, stick to the cow-culling pro- tocol: opens, dries, those with bad dispositions, those requiring individ- ual attention, those that raise poor calves, and ugly ones (your defini- tion, but don’t be too tough). Even in good herds, opens and dries make up most of the culls. If you routinely cull the others, you won’t have many to cull in any given year — and you will like your herd. This does not mean lots of milk, but the ability to deliver a healthy calf, stay mothered on pasture moves or long drives, and teach the calf to eat and live in its environment. These cows may not wean the big- gest calves, but the calves grow well for the environment in which they are raised. While the calves may not perform as well in the feedlot as ter- minal-sired calves, they should have very acceptable growth rates and feed conversion if they are slaugh- tered on time. The calves may even excel for the grass-fed niche. The great maternal herds are characterized by cows that get preg- nant as yearlings and again as 2-year-olds. They are good mothers raising good calves to an acceptable weaning weight. They maintain good body condition, using mostly grazed feed with minimal supplementation. Because of their self-sufficiency, they enable a significant reduc- tion in the need for overheads such as calving facilities and tools, and haymaking and feeding equipment along with labor and fuel. Such herds produce increased turnover resulting from their innate fertility and survivability.

Angus Bull Introduction
Fink Angus Program ~ Since 1977 We have seen all the extremes in the beef industry. Every extreme, every time, has led commercial producers down the wrong road. The trouble is generation turnover in the cattle industry is slow. When several problems appear due to extremes, plug- ging all the holes takes 2 more generations of “Flex Tape” to TRY to fix - problems will still be there ready to pop out. We have tried to stay in the middle of the road genetically for over 40 years. Balanced genetics that we feel are the most profit-making long term, for everyone. A new Angus EPD is FL - Functional Longevity. It “rolled” many bulls in the breed for $M. Average EPDs for a “maternal” breed such as Angus may be about right. Take note the $EN, Mature Weight, Scrotal, and Heifer Pregnancy (HP) are as important as “marbling” and yearling weight etc. Producers can go backwards (registered and commercial) chasing single traits, thinking they are going forward. It is very conceivable to gain 100# on mature cow weight in one sire use!! NOT GOOD!! Making total improvement and keeping expenses (cow costs) down is the goal for profit. Marbling can be increased quickly with age and days on feed. Is it concerning that feeding time is approximately 45 days longer than it was a few years ago? Weights are increasing and if it’s the form of much more fat on a carcass (which it is) how does that compete with pork, chicken and catfish? Plus it is inefficient! The key is to watch “Fat” EPD also! Yes, it is a fine line, but when all traits are not considered then results may end up go- ing in the wrong direction. If it takes extra fat to produce choice and prime, maybe we better use a Wagyu if that is the only goal and to keep the cowherd sound. Don’t forget the cow! Packers really don’t care about your cowherd. They just want the end product. Remember just a very few years back a lot of promotion was $B! We always called it terminal, now the Angus Association does also. How many commercial producers have “Terminal Genetics” in their herds now? Always remember ~ * Fertility in the cowherd. * Control of inputs in cowherd. * Structure and longevity. * 1st and foremost for Pro fit. Fink bulls MUST pass a semen BSE by 14 months - No matter when they are sold or they are CANNED. (Highly related to female fertility). Progressive Cattle Podcast “I don’t know who said it, but it says ‘the problems we see today can’t be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.’ And I think we’re at a place now with ranching where we’ve used technology, and we made a lot of progress, or I should say we made a lot of change. We’re certainly productive and sometimes that additional productivity hasn’t been always coupled with greater profitability. And in my opinion, and some people disagree, for many cow-calf operations, I think we’ve maximized productivity. And there’s some data I think from a number of re- sources that would support that.”

Numbers aren’t to bad either!! Very few Justified sons will ever be offered in the U.S. anymore as semen is hard to find, not because he was a poor producer, his fertility is excellent. Supply and demand!! Few bulls have ever achieved his status in the breed. Balance overall is pretty decent here, some numbered up bulls look horrible, and can’t walk because of bad feet (which breeds into their daughters also).
A beautiful day for the Kansas Angus Tour. Thanks to all that attended and hosted.

Don’t expect to have to sell daughters of these bulls at a young age due to feet, udder quality or reproductive problems. Many fads and chases have plagued all breeds through the years. Could it be possible (surely not) that in a swift move to create numbers (EPDs) that a wreck could happen??? Speed on anything can end up in a wreck generally.

Some packers are looking for 1200# fats and some will take all of the 1700# fats they can get. How does a set of cows chase that? Getting cows huge probably won’t work, unless producers give up the profit that can come from the cows side. It’s very easy to add 100+ pounds to a cow in one mating, for her mature weight. May want to think twice about chasing some EPDs.

Why would anyone need “terminal”, high $B Angus bulls unless both sexes are being fed out to harvest. Angus to us are maternal, make the kind of cows that last for many years. Crippled up, open cows at 4 years of age don’t make anybody any money. Once those kind of genetics get in a cow herd it will take 3-4 generations to get them ABOUT gone, they are NEVER gone!!! EPD chases gone bad???

Balanced EPDs in the most traits possible can be a pretty good fit for most long term producers. Never forget FERTILITY is #1.

You keep salvage value at Finks, some copied Fink guarantees, or made to sound better, the bull seller keeps salvage value!! In todays market that could mean the bull seller gets $3,000 back in their pocket!!!
A picture that is worth a thousand words. Gentlemen who have been in the Charolais industry a long time and we have became close friends with. This past fall we were humbled and shocked that Bill Nottke made it to our sale. However, we didn’t know that would be the last time we saw him as he passed a couple week after our sale. Bill was a great friend that believed in our program and had purchased a few of our high selling cows the past few years. Megan was able to capture this photo and we are glad she did. Thank you to Mike Schumacher for bringing Bill out here and to Dennis Adams and Rick Evans for their continued support as well. 4 great minds in this photo!

Cows with good udders, teats, longevity and fertility make folks happy at preg check time and at calving. Cows that last for many years instead of shipping young cows that are open or crippled doesn’t work.

In todays industry, producers need cowherds that last, cowherds that make profit also, if the genetics on the cows side can SAVE a producer $200/hd that adds up in the final paycheck !! Bred to make cows!! If they last for 10 years plus, producers will be much happier than having cows fall out early in life due to much growth, milk or kind. This set of bulls are all alike, deep, excellent thickness and lower birth weight!!

It has been suggested by some that maybe AVERAGE EPDs for maternal genetics may end up being about right?? Remember mature size has increased the past five years, a lot , in all breeds. A couple of generations and producers can have 1,700# Angus cows pretty quick, it all looks good on paper, chasing a couple of traits but you need to look at the other 32 EPD traits! What do they look like??
Customer service is as important at Finks as anything. Even calf sales in the early 1990’s!!
Leslie Hoover, one of the best cattle haulers there is. We appreciate working with him as he hauls many to the East Coast for us. But he always takes his fair share of ice cream bars!

What trait is the most important of all? FERTILITY . Open cows don’t produce many pounds. What is the cost of an open cow, figure it up sometime. That is why we insist on the EPDs that deal with fertility first, and then let the rest fall in place. Check out MATURE WEIGHTS on many high growth bulls. New formulas figured a few months ago, changed $M quite a bit on many bulls. When Functional longevity EPD was added, $M fell drastically on many bulls.

We could certainly add a couple hundred extra pounds to them, but to quote Andy Olson who taught us a lot about reality in the commercial industry, “you’ve never seen a fat athlete have you”. Made sense.

May work for others, that’s fine, but balanced or AVER- AGE in many traits seems to work. We like reports of high breed backs, quality udders, good feet and guess what, lots of 100% choice and prime reports also!!
