Producers, DO IT YOUR WAY! Thanks again for your potential interest in our cattle program. We have tried for 46 years. Lori and I started with one Angus cow in 1977, two jobs, all rented land. Lots of bumps along the way - just like all of you. It’s a fast paced world, changes happen every few minutes in everything and we all have to land on our feet as much as we can. Our Angus breeding program has remained pretty simple - some say pretty boring, and behind, because we don’t chase single traits. Maybe they are right - we tend to believe that fads (extremes) have plagued the beef industry for nearly a century. It takes years, be- cause of generation turnover, to play out! We take a slower approach and realize EPDs are a tool only, common sense is a tool, long term profit is demanded to stay in business for our customers. Purebred breeders can jump from extremes pretty easy, at the risk of their customers livelihood. We haven’t, nor will we, do that to our custom- ers. The current trend of fat cattle extended harvest time to 18-20 months, horribly fat cattle, yield grade 4 & 5 cattle hovering 20% or more?? Doesn’t make sense to us for the extra death loss, cripples, efficiency cost to put fat on etc. Pounds are important, but red meat production is also important. Work is being done on a new system of yield grading. The current system was put in place in the 1960’s. We do not believe one breed can solve all the answers. Use of hybrid vigor, in a planned program can make extra money in many ways. Those hybred females can add to the bottom line. There are niche markets for females etc. with straight bred cattle also many options for commercial programs are available. Do what works best for you. DO IT YOUR WAY - we just try to supply options and parts of poten- tial pieces, you decide your direction. That’s why we started Charo- lais in 2000, Copperheads in 2018, and have tried to keep our Angus maternal balanced for 40 plus years. Thanks for your interest. Galen
