BACK-TO-SCHOOL: ORAL HEALTH EDITION Start the Season Fresh!
You know summer is ending once you start seeing back-to-school ads on TV and every supermarket in town has school supplies front and center. It’s mind-blowing to me how fast summer flies by! One minute, I’m on vacation with my family. Then the next minute, I’m removing the summer hours from our office and replacing them with our regular times (remember, we’re now open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.!) . “The school year is a fresh start for you and your kids, so why not make it extra fresh by ensuring your oral health is in the best shape possible?” Back-to-school season is a hectic time for Dr. Derik and Dr. Chris. Not only are they helping their kids prepare for the upcoming school year, but their schedules are also filled with appointments! During the summer, people are busy traveling to their favorite vacation destinations, so dental appointments are often put on the back burner. But as soon as August rolls around, they decide to schedule teeth cleanings for everyone in their family.
We love that one of the tasks on your family’s list is to visit us! The school year is a fresh start for you and your kids, so why not make it extra fresh by ensuring your oral health is in the best shape possible? In honor of back-to-school month, I wanted to share some strategies for how you can encourage your kids to prioritize their oral health during the school year. While summer is a busy time, children can face their own challenges when returning to school. Here are two strategies that can help them this season. CREATE A DENTAL ROUTINE. At least two weeks or so before school starts, some parents gradually put their children back on a school routine. This could mean waking up a tad earlier, going to bed at a reasonable time, and performing chores they will do once school is back in session. I encourage you to help your child create a dental routine during this time too! Help them get into the habit of brushing their teeth each morning and flossing and brushing every night. Consistency is key for kids of all ages, and creating these routines can help children who struggle with new habits. If you have older children, they can help set an example for their younger siblings! ENSURE THEY HAVE ALL THEIR GEAR. Kids return to school with new supplies — backpacks, pencil pouches, notebooks, and more — but that’s not the only gear they may have. If your child now has braces, it’s best
to help them create a plan on how they can care for them while at school. You can create a braces kit that includes a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, floss, rubber bands, and dental wax. Additionally, if your child plays sports, be sure to invest in a mouthguard for extra protection! If you would like more information regarding back-to-school dental strategies you can use with your child or need to schedule an appointment, please call us today to get started! Preventive Dentistry With Laser Cavity Detection
From the

way missing teeth are replaced to your standard routine dental cleaning appointments, the world of dentistry is becoming more advanced. You likely remember your dentist examining X-rays, hunting for cavities and areas of potential or early signs of tooth decay. Sometimes, they even used the probing method to locate “sticky” areas with a sharp tool. However, as dentistry evolves, those tools have been replaced with lasers! Small, pen-shaped devices called diode lasers have been used for years for gingivitis treatments, teeth whitening, and gum reshaping procedures. However, they now help dentists detect areas of tooth decay well before a tooth experiences structural damage and requires a filling. Using diode lasers, dental professionals emit a beam into each tooth in a patient’s mouth and measure the density with transillumination.
Laser cavity detection is noninvasive and painless and does not risk radiation exposure because only light energy is used to capture dental diagnostics. And because laser cavity detection is so precise, it affords dentists the opportunity to catch decay early and stop it in its tracks before the tooth’s structure is compromised. This saves
patients money, dental anxiety over drilling and fillings, and pain.
As technology continues to shape the world around us, it also makes visiting the dentist more enjoyable, cost-effective, and efficient while improving your beautiful smile! Stay tuned for what is yet to come!

When your child loses a tooth, you may ask them to place it under their pillow and go to sleep so the tooth fairy can collect it. This tradition has been around for thousands of years! Many cultures have their own version of this mythical creature, and it’s interesting to see how far the story and tradition have come.
In honor of National Tooth Fairy Day, here are three fun facts about one of our favorite fairies!
THE TOOTH FAIRY TAKES ON DIFFERENT FORMS. American culture envisions the tooth fairy as a small, winged fairytale creature. But in Spanish-speaking countries, the tooth fairy isn’t a fairy but a tiny, friendly, furry mouse named Ratoncito Pérez who comes to collect a child’s teeth. The rodent will then leave a few coins, some pieces of candy, or a small gift as a reward for the tooth. THERE ONCE WAS A MUSEUM JUST FOR THE TOOTH FAIRY! Children’s book writer Rosemary Wells opened the Tooth Fairy Museum in her home in Deerfield, Illinois, in 1993. The attraction showcased art, books, dolls, and other memorabilia from the tooth fairy legend. Unfortunately, the museum closed when Wells passed away in 2000. NOT ALL CULTURES PLACE LOST TEETH UNDER PILLOWS. In some Asian countries, children participate in tooth-throwing. Which direction a child throws a tooth depends on the country, but for the most part, it’s believed that throwing the teeth straight up or down will encourage the adult teeth to grow straight as well. Tooth-throwing is also done for good luck, and in some countries, the children wish for their tooth to come back as a rodent’s tooth, since rodent teeth continuously grow! Children in Mongolia wrap their lost teeth in meat fat and feed it to the family dog. They believe that by doing this, their adult teeth will be strong like those of a canine. If the child doesn’t have a dog, they bury their teeth in the ground next to a tree. That way, their adult teeth will have strong roots. Do you and your family have any tooth fairy traditions? What do you do with your child’s teeth when they lose them? Feel free to share with us during your next visit!

End Summer on a High Note page 4
SUMMER ISN’T OVER YET! SPEND A DAY ON THE WATER. Enjoying the water is one of the summer’s greatest pleasures, so make the most of it one last time. Depending on where you live, you might incorporate this idea into your road trip. Head to the nearest beach, lake, or river and pack in as much summer fun as possible with a favorite summer activity or something new! You could help your kids build a sandcastle, rent a kayak or paddleboat, or try water skiing. You might even surf or snorkel. HAVE A LATE NIGHT. Bedtime routines are about to make a return for school kids, much to their possible dismay, but you can indulge them with one last hurrah. Plan a special late night the family can enjoy together. You might go to a drive-in theater or host a movie marathon at home with plenty of popcorn. Camping on your lawn will also allow staying up late together doing something exciting. No tent? No problem — build a pillow fort in the living room instead! Summer only comes once a year, so don’t let its final days go to waste. A special celebration to mark the season’s end will leave you with lasting memories and even more reasons to look forward to next year. 3 Memorable Ways to Close the Season
As much as many of us wish we could have an endless summer, all good things must come to an end. But why let the season close with a whimper when you can go out with a bang? Strive for a memorable last few days of the season with one of these family-friendly ideas. TAKE A FAMILY ROAD TRIP. What says “summer” more than piling in the car and driving somewhere? You don’t necessarily have to go far. A new town a few hours away can still be an adventure. Check out a local state park or nearby museum you’ve always meant to visit and let your children enjoy the novelty of sleeping in a hotel room or camper. Even a weekend away will feel like an occasion and stick out in everyone’s memories.
