121 French School (Second Half 17th Century) Portrait of a standing man in armour with the knight’s cross of the ‘Ordre du Saint-Esprit’

A pencil annotation on the back of a black-and-white photograph in the RKD, The Hague suggests an attribution to the circle of Robert Nanteuil (1623-1678) or Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674). The ‘Ordre du Saint-Esprit’ (Order of the Holy Spirit) was founded in 1578 by King Henry III in France (1551- 1589) as the highest chivalric order of France, created to strengthen the loyalty of the Catholic nobility to the crown. It was abolished during the French Revolution and permanently dissolved in 1830.
