This painting is a copy after the drawing made by Cornelis Troost in 1738, in: J.W. Niemeyer, ‘Cornelis Troost 1696-1750)’, Assen 1973, p. 282, no. 429 T. In 1758 Cornelis Ploos van Amstel married Elizabeth Troost (1730-1790), daughter of Cornelis Troost. They had already known each other for years, as Ploos van Amstel was a collector of her father’s work. The brother of Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, doctor and littérateur Jacob Ploos van Amstel (1735-1784), married to the other daughter of Cornelis Troost, Sara Troost (1732- 1803) in 1778.
