Alexander Joseph Daiwaille stayed in Kleve, Germany, from 1840 to 1848, where he was trained by his brother-in-law, the painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803–1862). The influence of Koekkoek can be seen in this painting, which Daiwaille created shortly after this period, in 1851. In 1849, Daiwaille settled in Brussels. This landscape was likely inspired by one of his study trips through the Belgian Ardennes.
