Provenance: -Collection Jacobus Hijmans (1816-1896) - the uncle of Jozef Israëls’ wife Aleida Schaap (1843-1894) - and his wife, the poetess Estelle Dorothea Salomea Hertzveld (1837-1881). -Thence by descent in the collection of Mr Nicolaas Arnold Calisch (1858-1899) and his wife Mrs Dorothea Dina Estella Hijmans (1864-1899); Their auction, C.F. Roos & Cie., Amsterdam, 17 October 1899, lot 35, as: ‘Une vieille histoire, toujours renouvelée’, where acquired by Roos (Genke) (sold for 5.400 guilders). -In the collection of the family of the present owner since at least the early 20th century. This lot is accompanied by a letter signed by the painter and dated, ‘ ‘s-Gravenhage 9 October 1899’, in which Jozef Israëls writes about the present painting, then up for auction [Roos, Amsterdam, 17 October 1899, ’die thans in veiling komt’].
