Provenance: -Auction, Laren, North-Holland, 11 May 1949, lot 117. -In the collection of the present owner for 60 years. Willem Maris painted this work in 1871, when the artist undertook a journey to Norway with the travelling painter Alexander Wüst (1837-1876). In general, he painted and drew empty, barren landscapes. He made a number of studies of a hut or stable. In the lot now up for auction, he managed to depict the whimsical combination of stones, wood and sods of the structure in brown, green and grey tones using oil paint.
