Born on 13 November 1853, Hidde Nijland was a passionate connoisseur of both old and modern art and an active member of the artists’ society Pictura. After becoming financially independent, he devoted himself fully to the cultural and social life of Dordrecht, striving to be remembered as the city’s great patron of the arts. Following the death of his father-in-law, Dirk Volker, in 1890, Nijland inherited a substantial fortune. He used part of this inheritance to purchase a grand property at Prinsenstraat 36 (now 42–44), where he created an extraordinary interior. His home featured a Hindelooper-style room, ceiling paintings on linen by August Terwesten (1649–1711), and an impressive collection of paintings from the Hague and Amsterdam Schools. Nijland was also one of the earliest collectors of Vincent van Gogh’s work, amassing more than one hundred of the artist’s drawings. In addition, he dedicated an entire room to the works of Jan Toorop (1858–1928), reflecting his commitment to supporting contemporary art of his time.
