Jan Toorop designed this poster in 1898 for the National Exhibition of Women’s Labor in The Hague, an event aimed at improving public opinion on women’s work and increasing employment opportunities for women. He used the portrait he had made in 1897 of Marguérite Adolphine Helfrich for the face of the woman in this work.
