David Abercrombie Donaldson (Chryston, Lanarkshire 1916–1996) was a leading 20th-century Scottish artist from Chryston. Elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1962, he became the Queen’s Limner in Scotland in 1977 - an ancient court title. At his death, he was Honorary Vice-President of the Glasgow School of Art, where he had headed the Painting Department (1967–1981). Donaldson was one of the most influential figures in post-war Scottish art. In later life, he showed little interest in modern movements such as Cubism or abstraction, preferring to develop his own distinctive style. His vision of an art school combined classical training with a bohemian spirit, free from puritanical restraint. He often toured student studios, discouraging anything too avant-garde. Donaldson’s art - whether still life, portrait, or landscape - was direct and instinctive. He worked without preparatory sketches, relying instead on imagination, intuition, and the expressive power of paint.
