Literature: -Anita Hopmans, ‘De onbekende Van Dongen. Vroege en Fauvistische tekeningen 1895-1912’, exhibition catalogue Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam 1996, ill. p. 80. note 276. Provenance: -Auction, Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 15-18 April 1969, lot 566 (sold for Dfl. 1,300). This drawing by Kees van Dongen appeared as an illustration on the front page of the Sunday edition of ‘Het Volk’ on 17 August 1902. It had been submitted in response to a call issued in June by the socialist daily ‘Het Volk’ for a trial drawing under this title. The purpose of the call was to select a permanent illustrator for the Sunday paper. Van Dongen remained in the running alongside Albert Hahn (1877-1918), who lived in Amsterdam; Hahn ultimately won. As an explanation of the selection, Van Dongen’s submission was also printed. The drawing was included unchanged, reduced to about one-third of its original size, in the weekly Sunday supplement of ‘Het Volk’, with the handwritten title replaced by printed text.

Executed in 1902.
