Arriving at Your Destination
On The Road Pets, just like children, need regular stops on long road trips. Be sure to have cats and dogs on a lead in unfamiliar areas, particularly along busy roads to avoid any unwanted accidents where your pet could run off.
It’s time to relax, you’ve arrived! If the accommodation is unfamiliar to your pet, it is a good idea to have them on a lead or in their carrier until the accommodation or yard is secured and all gates and doors are closed. Let your pet explore the area in their own time. Dogs and cats are likely to mark their territory, so be prepared to wipe up accidents.

What To Pack Always remember to have a ready supply of water for your pet, it’s best to have refillable bottles on hand , just in case you aren’t near any taps on your stops to your holiday destination. Don’t forget to pack waste bags to pick up your pet’s poo too. If you are travelling long distances you might need to rethink your pet’s food for the journey. Dry food can easily be transported but you might need to think about wet food options. Individual wet food cans or pouches are a great convenient choice. If your are introducing new food, transitioning to the new product before your trip is a good idea.
Before you hit the road it’s best to be prepared. If your pet hasn’t travelled long distances in the car before why not practise some short trips a few weeks before your big holiday adventure. Increase the distance and time spent in the car on each practice trip, these will ensure your pet is familiar with your car and less anxious about travelling. You’ll also be able to gauge if your pet suffers from motion sickness and you can speak to your vet about medication options that can prevent or alleviate travel sickness in pets. Pack wipes, towels, and bags in case of accidents.

Has a new puppy recently joined your family? Our friends at ADVANCE and Advantage Petcare have provided some useful feeding and worming advice for new puppy owners.
Your Puppies First Worming Treatment
Brought to you by Advantage Petcare
One of the most important first steps in a puppy’s first life is worming. Here’s everything you need to know about deworming puppies. Worms are one of the most common causes of sesrious illness in puppies, so it’s important to treat your puppy for worms and soon as they arrive home. Make sure you have all the facts before you get started.
Common Puppy Feeding Queries Brought to you by ADVANCE Veterinarian Dr Fiona
What are the signs of worms in puppies? Not all infected puppies will show obvious signs of having worms, which is why regular treatment is especially important - regardless of whether or not they have any symptoms of worms. Common signs of worms in puppies include: • weakness and listlessness • Failure to thrive/grow
Why is worming important? A puppy should be wormed as early as two weeks of age. By the time a puppy is old enough to go to a new, forever home (ideally 8 weeks of age, after weaning) it’s vital to maintain a deworming program to ensure your pet stays healthy and comfortable. Intestinal worms such as hookworms, tapeworms, and round worms can make your puppy sick and unable to effectively absorb much needed nutrients and vitamins. They can also cause blood loss and anaemia, which can be serious in early stages of your puppy’s life. Humans can also contract these parasites, which can lead to intestinal pain, diarrhoea, and more serious health problems, such as blindness and respiratory issues. In short, you dont want worms - and neither does your puppy.
It can be argued that nothing plays a more important role in healthy puppy growth and development as nutrition, so lets look at some common queries.
Should I feed my puppy a home-made diet? It can be tempting to feed a puppy a diet made of human food and table scraps, However, it’s a challenge to create a home-made diet that is complete and balanced, especially in the long run. Compaired to humans, puppies have a shorter growth phase which means there’s less oppertunity to correct nutritional imbalances if they arise. It’s vital that puppies recieve a complete and balanced diet that’s specially formulated to support their healthy growth and development. a high quality, super premium pet food provides this peace of mind. In addition, some human foods can be toxic to pets such as grapes, rasins, onions, and chocolate.
How much should I feed my puppy? Use the feeding guide found on pet food packaging as a starting point. This will show you the total daily amount to offer your puppy. Keep an eye on your puppy’s body condition so that you can fine tune the amount fed if needed. Have a chat to your veterinarian if you’re concerned about your puppy’s body condition or growth rate.
How often should I feed my puppy? In general, younger puppies should be fed smaller meals more frequently. This is to help allow them to take in enough food for growth. Their stomach capacity is small, therefore they require frequent meals. Start off dividing your puppy’s total daily food into four small meals. Over time, the number of meals can be gradually reduced so that by the time your puppy reaches adulthood, they will be on one or two meals per day. Ensure that your puppy has free access to a continual supply of fresh drinking water in a suitable sized container.
• Diarrhoea • Vomiting • Weightloss (despite increased appetite) • Abnormally swollen pot-belly • Stool that contains spaghetti-like worms, mucus, or blood Keep in mind that, with the exception of worms in stool, these symptoms can indicate other health problems - so, check with your vet to be sure.
How do I get rid of worms in puppies? Although worms are nasty buisness, they’re fairly easy to treat. You can give your puppy a worming treatment which you can purchase from all reputable pet stores, like Pets Domain. Your puppy’s worming schedule Many puppies are born with worms and aquire more from their mother’s milk, which is why it’s so important to stick to a treatment schedule.
Another reason why worming is so important? Puppies can easily get worms from their mother in utero or via their mothers milk. this is why puppies as young as two week old should recieve a worming treatment.
Should I feed my puppy dry or wet food? Dry and wet foods are equally nutritious, and each feeding format offers its own benifits. Feeding both dry and wet food together is known as ‘mixed feeding. This method of feeding provides a pet with a variety of aroma, taste, and texture and enables them to get the benifits that each feeding format offers. When feeding both wet and dry food, simply half the recommended quantities of each product and let your puppy enjoy the advantages that mixed feeding brings.
Treat your puppy for worms at: • 2 weeks old as long as they weigh at least 500g
• 4 weeks (1 month) old • 8 weeks (2 months) old • 12 weeks (3 months) old
Different sized puppies have different nutritional needs, so remember to choose a formula that is tailored accordingly. Nurture your puppy through expert pet nutrition and set them up for a lifetime of love.
After your puppy is three months old, they should be treated for worms at least once every three months for life. Ensure that you read the product leaflet for full instructons.

Have you brought a new kitten home recently... ...and need to know all the important feeding and worming tips to keep your little feline healthy and happy? Pets Domain’s friends at ADVANCE and Advantage Petcare are here to help.
Worming & Kittens: Common Worms & How To Treat Them Brought to you by Advantage Petcare Kittens are particualrly susceptible to worms and other parasites, Advantage Petcare have the facts about worms that kittens can contract, and when you can start giving your kitten a worming treatment. Kittens can easily contract worms, and when they do, they can be more severely impacted by infections than their adult cat counterparts. Many Kittens won’t show any sign of having worms, which is why it’s so important to treat them - whether or not you suspect their presence. If left untreated, worms can cause weight loss, vomiting, diarrhoea, irritation, and a range of other health issues that can negatively impact a kitten’s growth - and even survival. It is best to start worming your kitten from 6 weeks of age. Familiarising yourself early on with the signs and symptoms of worms, as well as the types of treatments available, can help with preperation and prevention.
Common Kitten Feeding Qureies Brought to you by ADVANCE Veterinarian Dr Fiona
Cats are classified as obligate carnivores and have unique nutritional requirements. Therefore, nutritions plays a critical role in ensuring healthy kitten growth and development. Let’s consider some common feeding queries to help your kitten grow up right.
Types of worms commonly found in kittens There are three main types of inestinal worms that can infect you kitten: roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms.
Should I feed my kitten dry or wet food? Dry and wet foods are equally nutritious, and each feeding format offers it’s own benifits. The feeding of both wet and dry food together is know as ‘mixed feeding’. This method provides the pet with aroma, taste, and texture variety and enables them to get the benifits that each feeding format offers. When feeding both wet and dry food, simply half the recommended quantities of each product and let your kitten enjoy the advantages that mixed feeding brings. Cat are often percieved to be finiky eaters, but underlying a cat’s eating behaviour is their own feeding preferences. When first offered a new food, cats can be neophoinic (fear/dislike of anything new or unfamiliar). If fed the same diet over a long period of time, a cat may find the food monotonous ands seek out new food choices. Through mixed feeding, you can support your cat’s natural feeding pattern by helping relieve monotony. Nourish your kitten through expert pet nutrition and you’ll be laying the foundations for a healthy life.
Should I feed my kitten a home-made diet? It can be tempting to feed a pet a diet made up of human food and table scraps. However, it is a challenge to create a home-made diet that is complete and balanced, especially in the long run. Kittens need a complete and balanced diet that is specially formulated to support their healthy growth and development. A high quality, super premium pet food provides this peace of mind. How often should I feed my kitten? In general, younger kittens should be fed smaller meals more frequently. This is to help allow them to take in enough food for growth. Their stomach capacity is small; therefore, they require frequent meals. Cats are naturally graze feeders, and may regulate their food intake as well. It is acceptable to measure out their daily food allowance and offer this over multiple meals per day. Monitor your cat’s body condition on an on-going basis, to avoid obesity. Male kittens tend to eat more and grow faster than female kittens but both sexes can be gradually introduced to an adult cat diet from 12 month of age. Ensure that your kitten has free access to a continual supply of fresh drinking water in a suitable sized container.
Roundworms Roundworms are the most common and can be passed on through: • The faeces of an infected cat • infected soil • Their mother’s milk • Hunting and eating infected Because of their age and obvious close contact with their mother, kitten are particularly susceptible to roundworm. Hookworms Hookworms are blood suckers that live in the insestines of kittens and cats. Kittens can be infected by: • Ingesting larvae from the environment that hatch out of eggs from faeces of an infected cat • Hunting and eating infected animals • Larvae from the soil infecting through the skin animals e.g. birds, rodents, lizards
Tapeworms Tapeworms are long, flat, and segmented. Kittens are most likely to contract a tapeworm by accidently eating infected fleas while grooming. As the kitten grooms, they ingest infected fleas and the larvae of the tapeworm attatches itself to the kitten’s small intestine, where it develops into an adult worm.
Other worms Kittens can also be infected by heartworm and lungworms, and the health consequenses of these parasites can be severe, so prevention in key.
In contrast to dogs, kittens are not born with worm larvae already present in their gut, but they can contract them from their mother’s milk. Because of this risk, worming treatment should begin from a young age. Some worming treatments can begin once kittens are six weeks old. Once your kitten is 9 weeks of age, they can start a monthly treatment. Regular worming treatments will ensure your kitty stays happy, healthy, and safe from worms throughout its nine lives as a cat.
When to begin worming treatments in kittens
